Im buying a PS3 next week and a 32" sony bravia HDTV KDL32V4000U.

I share a house during week and was looking into buying a PC Monitor - less hassle of lugging the 32" around.

I'v heard that if you have a LCD for your PC monitor you can geta HDMI to DVI convertor and get the higher resolution graphics.

First of all whats HDMI to DVI convertor?

    Anybody any experience of this?

What make/model monitor to buy & where & how much €€€€?

    Thanks in advance

If you are going to use a monitor for PS3, you will need a new model monitor that supports HDCP over DVI. If the monitor you are looking at doesn't support this feature, you will get no video output from your PS3.

Also to be aware of, is that PS3 doesn't support PC monitor native resolutions. It will only output 720p, 1080i or 1080p. If your monitor doesn't scale these correctly, the image will be stretched or have large black borders.

Pick one. You'd want at least a 24" monitor as most of them support 1080p. I see only one 22" monitor on the komplett site that does 1080p.

Note: a lot of them now also comes with hdmi port so there's no need for the hdmi to dvi convertor or worry about having hdcp over dvi if you get the right monitor.

1920×1080 (1080p res) vs 1920x1200 (24" monitor native res), the black bars won't be that large and if it stretches you won't notice it unless you are looking at a perfect sphere.

Also, be aware that DVI does not carry any sound whatsoever so to get that at the same time, you'll need a sound system that will take an optical connection and set the ps3 to outputting sound by optical. I really dont think its worth the bother. A 19" or 22" lcd tv(19" - 1440 x 900, 22" 1650 x 1050) will have the same resolution as a monitor of that size and will have a hdmi port that will bypass all that DVI bother.

I'd still just go for the 32v4000, though. That will show a better picture than any smaller monitor at normal viewing distance and at the end of the day a 32" lcd aint that big at all and would you really be lugging it around all that much?? Great value too

At least 2 of the 24" monitors that support hdmi have built in speakers.

I assume they are there cause they can take audio from hdmi. In any case, surround sound is worth the bother to use the optical out.

ps: that sony bravia is only hd ready, and specs on the web says a resolution of 1366×768.

What is the difference between HD ready and full HDTV?? Most TV i'v been looking at are HD ready? For the purpose of playing PS3 surely HD ready would do???

HD Ready TVs usually have a resolution of 1366 x 768 which means that the highest HD resolution they can do is 720p (which is 1280 x 720) and not the maximum current HD resolution of 1080p (which is 1920 x 1080). Though the PS3 will look very good in 720p, it is capable of doing 1080p, so if I was buying a TV right now, I'd go for the 1080p capable ones, as they would be a bit more future-proof too. You should also consider the screen size: at 32" or even larger, it would be very difficult to spot the difference between 720p and 1080p resolutions - on larger TVs, it would make more of a difference.
