Where to go for amp modification in Ireland?

Have 15w valve Johnson combo. Handy cheap lil amp but could do with speaker and maybe tube replacements (could at least do the speaker myself, i know ) or maybe more major surgery like modding the tone section to sound a bit more blonde... hum reduction (sheilding?)... whatever... Just wondering is there anyone doing these kinda jobs here in Ireland?

You could do the speaker and valves yourself. Very simple job indeed. Speaker is most likely just a case of unscrewing, unplugging from the amp, and removing. Valves are similar, either pull them straight out, or there could be some covering protecting the valves the needs removing. So long as you buy similar valves there should be no probs, like replacing a 6v6 with another 6v6.

Sorry to contradict ya, but there might still be biasing issues with replacing the power tubes, even if he stays with the same type. It'd be fine if his amp has some sort of external bias circuit though.

I think Alan was refering to small valve amps like the Champ that use the 6V6 or EL84 power valve. These amps are generally cathode biased and don't require rebiasing as long as you use the same valve type. In fact you can't adjust the bias in these amps without changing the cathode resistor value.
Most bigger amps (15W+ though there are exceptions, the AC30 being a prime example) use fixed (adjustable) bias and as you say would require a re-biasing.
Of course any preamp valve can be replaced with a similar type without any bias change. 12AX7s can be replaced with 12AU7, 12AY7, or 12AT7 each giving it own unique voice and gain levels. Different brands (and even different examples of the same brand) also can have differing tones.
The 15W Johnson is a hybrid that uses a 12AX7 in the pre amp but has a solid state power section AFAIK.

Yeah, right you are. Dont know what i was thinking! Still new to rebiasing myself, well, in saying that, i've never done it! My Blues deluxe doesn't have an adjustable bias!
    Cheers for that spoonbadger!

Yea, i could do the speaker myself, but bit afraid of the biasing tho - it has valves at pre and power stages so I'll prob give aladdins a shout (never knew about them), ta...

    Thanks all . Enda
