I'm going to Gaol soon, along with at least two others from the Boards.ie Photography Forum.

This is where Photography can lead to. One day you are taking happy snaps of the family, the next you find you are heading to Prison.

    More details soon.

    Kilmainham Gaol it is.

Earlier this year I organised a Club Trip to Kilmainham Gaol as it was a site that I really wanted to photograph, but with more time than is available on the public tour. It took a lot of organisation & having to go through the legalities of insurance cover etc.
We eventually had permission to have a group of 10 have access for the day. It was really good to be able to spend the time & take photo's without a lot of people wandering through the frame. It made me realise I needed a wider lens & a better tripod too.
A few months later we invited the Director of the Gaol to come to the Club & talk about the History of the Gaol, as depicted in the photographs taken by the group. It was a very enjoyable night.

Recently I contacted the Gaol again to inquire about organising another trip along the same lines. The Director of the Gaol was very impressed with the quality of the images we had produced the first time, especially when he was told that a lot of the work was from our Novice members. The second trip will be run again soon, but we are also forming a small group that will be allowed access to the Gaol, over the next few months, to take more photographs. The best of these images will form a Photographic Exhibition inside the Gaol, along side a series of historic photographs from the archives.

We were limited to 15 members in the group & I had more than twice that apply to take part. Those who did not make the primary list will have access too as they will be assistants to the main group.

It's going to be a lot of work, but I am really looking forward to it.

If you're organising any more trips in the future let us know here, I'd love to go along. Last time I was in Kilmainham Gaol was on a school trip a very long time ago :)

We will be organising a trip there soon. It will probably be in January, but will be on a weekday. Due to Insurance restrictions it is limited to members of the Dublin Camera Club.
