Never really gave Lou Reed much of a listen before so I randomly put this on. The first thing I thought was that it was a garbled annoying noise to discourage music piracy... What the hell? I deleted it straight off.

Now I'm open minded-ish but this was horrific. A quick wiki informed me that what I heard was the actual recording. It reminded me of another artist that I quickly discarded, John Cage.

What I'm asking here is; was this music ever intended to be enjoyed? Or is it basically sound art, something to look at and think "Hm, that's interesting, not going on my iPod though.

The story's behind this are many (Lou Reed changes his story every time he changes his underwear). The most famous story is that he made it to piss off the record label. Goal achieved. He also said he did it to piss off his fans. Goal achieved. He's now touting the sound art/"every noise is intentional and in a certain place" story which has gained credence since the contemporary ensemble Zeitkratzer transcribed MMM into sheet music and now play it live on normal orchestral instruments! (it's much better than the original)
