Accomodation in Patong, Phuket

Arriving in Phuket next week at about 8pm in the evening. Want to stay in and around Patong for about 3 nights. Would you recommend booking a hotel for the first night since im arrving so late, or should it be handy enough to find a place at that time of the evening? also anyone got any recomendations? cheers!
