Concrete is the only option, stone, bark, sand, gravel, screedings, slabs are a waste of time. Concrete is easy to clean and way more hygienic than any of the aforementioned.

Hard to beat the concrete. It's the easiest to maintain and keeps the dogs nails short.

I am just in the middle of building one for my dog. I got my hands on a sod cutter to take up the grass, squared it off using 2*3’s and put down a 3 inch concrete base with a drain in one corner. I have two rows of blocks going around the outside and I am going to fasten 2*3 uprights to them and close it off using a heavy chain link fence.

fix a wooden frame to the blocks then just tack a strong wire mesh to the frame. i made a frame with a door in it for access, treated it with cedar shed life then u-nailed strinf wire mesh to it. use door fixings to fix the frame to the block work.

I used Chain Link fencing on my run and my springer pup broke several holes open out through the bottom of it. In the end I had to reinforce it with 2" weld mesh to shop her getting out

snap on the chain link fence, my springer did the same. i changed it 1" weld mesh. u-nailed it to the frame. even the hounds cant get through it, and the chew through anything.

I tried keeping my girlfriend in a run as well ... she was having non of it lol

I have u-nailed the welded mesh to the "inside" of my up rights stops the little blighters chewing on the uprights.

If you can at this stage - put in outdoor lights and an outdoor tap.

when i built my dog run i put in a concrete base put in an aj and gully . I also plumbed it for a tap and i fitted a lamb drinker so my springer always has access to water i then built her a shed complete with door and dog flap.I fitted a light inside the pen and i also fitted a power point just in case of nuclear attack. It makes it easy to clean and keeps my missus off my case
