    Hi everyone,

We have just moved to Ireland from Germany. We are now living in Ballincollig. I need some help if somebody can answer me, i will be very thankfull.

    1. Is there any primary school (for boys) in Ballincollig?
    2. My husband want to buy a car, what should he be carefull by buying a car.

    3. Can anybody suggest us for Bin service, which one should we take?
And what will be the monthly cost of it?

    4. We want to buy a babyseat (for car) for our 2 children. (age 1 and 5 ) Is there any secondhand shop?

    thanks

    Maha

    1. St Johns primary school, Station Rd (up by the old church)
    2. Best bet is to shop around.
    3. There are many bin services, look them up via the newsletter and go for the cheapest quote.
    4. Don't know.

Bin service is provided by the County Council, Greenstar, Country Clean and possibly others. I think the County Council is most expensive as they weigh the bins. Minimum cost with any service would be €220 per year.

For the baby seat check the Free Ads in the Evening Echo newspaper on a Tuesday.

    Welcome to Cork!
You've two choices for boys in Ballincollig, Scoil Eoin, located here, which is boys only or Scoil Barra, located here, which is co-ed.

For cars you can try http://www.carzone.ie or check out the main dealers. They're probably desperate for deals atm in dealerships so be reserved and push them for a good deal.

    Regards.

I recommend Green Star for bins as they seem to be the cheapest and they also collect your glass.

Supposedly the quality of Scoil Eoin and Scoil Mhuire (the main single sex schools) has been going down hill the last few years. It has been over 8 years since my brother and I attended either, but with friends being in scoil barra I found that they had the better choice all round of academic and after school activities, I found that scoil eoin heavily emphasied sports as part of the main curriculum often letting children practise sports instead of lessons.

Now saying that, my opinion is based on my past experiences of the schools and a lot may have change since me or my brother attended either. My advice would be to set up a meeting with the principals for a viewing of the school and go with what you think your child will benefit most from. Or even better if you could get friendly with a few of your neighbours in the area and suss the schools out from them.

Welcome to Ballincollig! Been living here for all 23 of my wise years...lol....so feel free to pm if you want to ask any questions about the area.

thanks for your detailed information. We really need that. In Germany there are schools for both (male/female) so i can not still realise what the difference between them is.
You are right, we should visit school and then decide.

    thanks again

I'd personally recommend the Gael Scoil in Ballincollig(Irish speaking school) but I doubt that's an option. I'd say send your kid(s) to Scoil Barra. I went to Scoil Eoin myself and wouldn't be the biggest supporter of same sex school schools. They're relics.

    hi maha,

given the age of your oldest (5) the irish speaking school shouldnt be a problem, most kids starting there wont have any irish, or speak it at home either.

Increases your choices if you include them.

Go to the local schools speak with the principal, and if possible the class teacher, have a look around see out happy the kids are, also what is the age profile of the teachers, younger teachers may be a bit more progressive.

Hope living in cork works for you and family.

I always forget about the Gaelscoil.....Gaelscoil Ui Riordain.....with your children being so young this is definately an option, it takes both boys and girls, and have never heard anything bad about the schools, as far as I know they do introductory Irish classes for the parents at night in order to keep them on par with the children. It a few minutes from Scoil Barra so still within reach. Two of the kids I know attend here and love it, they dont even realise that speaking in Irish constantly isnt the norm amoungst other schools!

For a babyseat you might try the Balance shop on the top corner of the Supervalu carpark. Not sure if it's a shop as well as a coffee shop. Otherwise try the noticeboard inside the back entrance of the Supervalu shop in the town. There's likely to be someone selling one.

I'm thinking of changing to Greenstar for the bins. It's costing me E500 a year with the County Council and Greenstar are well under E400 a year + the bottle collection for free.

I went to St Johns but that was back in the days when Cronin/Hickey/Conway stomped the halls. What a blast it was....

The girls school was across the road...

The mixed school must be new

We lived in Muskerry Est so it was a short walk...

Gael means Irish, Scoil means School. The Irish speaking school in Ballincollig is called Gaelscoil Ui Riordain. It's a mixed school, girls and boys. Everything is taught through Irish. Starting out age 4 or 5 you wouldn't need any grasp of Irish. There's plenty of foreign students going there as far as I know.

    It's located here

    Website is here

    thanks for replies.

I have called at school Barra, but they have no place. I am going to visit school Eoin. May be there it will be.

If could not find any place for my child in Ballincollig, is there any other school near ballincollig, or in Cork. And if there will be Bus availlable for children?

    thanks

As far as I know there arent any specialist buses available to take primary school children. Outside of Ballincollig you have Ovens, Bishopstown and Wilton. Youll have to get transport to all of them. http://www.corkandross.org/ They have an education tab and have a list of all the primary schools by area.

Hi there - hope its ok to crash into this thread with my own questions but he I could really do with some advice.
My son is 5 in september - he is a very bright little fella but unfortunately due to a need for grommits being spotted a bit late hes speech was delayed. He has made great progress with speech therapy but is still struggling with alot of communication with he's peers.

I have him enrolled in Scoil ui Riordan which is irish speaking. I have nieces in the school and really like it but Im concerned the irish will be overwhelming for him. I know Scoil Barra has a language developement department which would mean great help for him.

    Any input would be great

As a Parent my two boys attended Scoil Eoin. We found the school to be a happy learning environment for our sons, having excellent teachers and hitting a great balance between educational and extra curricular activities. We saw the boys only aspect a great opportunity for the boys' development.

Welcome to Ireland and best of luck with everything.

I'd hope they managed to find them before now - considering the children are now probably aged 6 and 11.
