    Hi Folks,

I've been using a 450D for a while and unfortunately its time to give it back to its owner. I'm hopefully getting a 50D on Thursday in Calumet (fantastic exchange rate at the moment) and I've decided that I'm going to get the 10-22mm lens (for landscapes etc) and the 17-55mm for my walkabout lens.

I want to get a zoom and I was looking at the 70-200mm F2.8 IS, however I'm starting to get nervous about it. The reason being, I'm conscious of the weight and the fact that I'm an amateur, not a professional. I also want a lens I can bring places which I've heard is a drawback for the F2.8. In reality I'm nervous about spending so much money on a lens that I might be turned off using if its a chore to carry about.

A few months ago I was recommended to get the 70-200mm F4 IS as a zoom and a fast prime for indoor shots. One of the limitations to this lens is lowlight, what exactly would be considered low light, an overcast day, a dark room ?

Also, would you recommend a prime for lowlight or indoor shooting? If so, which one? I was looking at the 85mm F1.8 prime, how do you think this would compliment the F4?

Can anyone give me advice on what to do, should I stick with the F2.8 IS or get a F4 IS and a prime? Can anyone recommend another prime or a more suitable one?

Any and all advice will be gratefully appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Rael

The 70-200 is a heavy lens, especially the L IS version. However, the non IS version isn't that bad actually and is very manageable indeed.

As an alternative, why not go for the 24-104 L F4. Its a nice small lens, super sharp and is most defo not heavy. The only limitation would not reaching the 200mm mark if that was important to you. Its also a great walkabout lens for holidays with many a member on here that can vouch for that. Its useful as it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb for thieves to come over and want to help relieve you of it.

The biggest dilemma is see is whether you want to F2.8 which is really useful especially in low light conditions but like anything else in this game it depends on what you need it for.

With regards to prime, the ones mostly used are the 50 F1.4 & the 85 F1.8 - both cheap and excellent glass.

Good luck in your search (& decision making)!!
