Early Senility

This year, I've developed a new habit. Every so often, when I open the front door to my house, I leave the keys sitting in the door (and don't notice until I go looking for them later). Last week, I did it for the front door of my place of employment - on a fairly busy street in Galway (suffice to say, I would have easily been fired if anyone realized before I did).

I'm only in my mid-thirties, I don't think I should be losing my facilities this early.

I really wouldn't be concerned, you're probably just distracted by something else. Diet and lack of sleep can also result in poor concentration. If you're really concerned then go to your GP.

Telling you that this is an atrocious way to post and that you should try and use the actual English language is well worth the potential infraction.

crazzzzy no more txt speak. It makes people read like eejits and is against the charter. Zillah leave the modding to the mods please.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

For about two months during the summer my boyfriend would forget to lock his car every time he got out. He only stopped when he made a conscious effort to concentrate on locking it. As it's something he did every day he would often do it without thinking, but when thinking of something else he would also forget about it altogether, relying on his subconscious to lock the car out of habit.

I doubt you're going senile, just make a concentrated effort to remember to take your keys out of the door and you'll soon stop doing it. I bet you were thinking of something else every time you did it.

The more I think about it the better an idea this is. As I said it's probably nothing, but if you genuinely are having a decrease in mental faculties it could be a symtom of all sorts of things and there's no harm getting it checked out.

I find if I'm stressed and have a lot of things on my mind, that I can be forget like what you described. I think there's only so much the human brain can cope with and sometimes between work and running around etc. the poor thing gets overloaded. I find if I take it easy for a while, that I get back to normal again.

Worrying that you're going senile is only going to make things worse. You could talk to your doctor - it could be a symptom of something else rather than senility. Whatever you do, don't go googling your symptoms.

If you're worried about Alzheimer's or dementia or any neurological disorders, go chat to your doctor about it. There are tests that can be done to determine if it's actually neurological or just you being forgetful.

But I'm 21 and constantly forgetting stuff. The amount of times I go to my car in the morning and realise I've left it unlocked overnight is just silly. I leave keys in the doors after I've opened them. I go to the shop for milk and come back with bread, chocolate and a newspaper but completely forget I ever wanted milk. These are all quite normal things to do, and are generally a result of A) stress, B) poor attention span, or C) general forgetfulness. They're not things to worry about.

If you're genuinely worried and this is happening alot with other situations then a visit to your GP will do no harm.

Most of us have a million and one things on our plate at the same time and forgetfullness is just a sign of a full brain imho. My thing was forgetting if id plugged things out, especially the iron as im always rushing. The amount of times ive been half way up the M50 and got that stomach flip and thought "f*ck the iron" even though ive yet to go back to find it plugged in. As this is my thing, just like you leaving your keys in the door, ive now gotten in the habit of actually saying out loud "irons out" (weird i know) but i swear it works.
