1749 Synge Census and Serjeant

I am working on a local history and looking through the Synge (Elphin) census in the Diocese of Elphin from 1749. This census covers most of Roscommon and parts of Galway and Sligo.
I find 5 families where head of household is listed as a Serjeant (sic).

I know policing did not start in Ireland until the 1800's. There is no army barracks nearer than 15 miles away. No other police or military ranks stated. What would these Serjeants have been?

The 5 are spread over the old parish which has now got 2 Garda Stations in it and would have had 4 RIC stations in 1901.
