Favourite Survivor Series matches

Since it's coming up, I thought it might be an interesting topic.

As a kid I used to love the traditional Survivor Series format and I would have to go with the 1988 10 man tag elimination match. It was just non stop action with a tonne of great wrestlers (Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Dynamite Kid, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard) and a few not so good ones.

I also enjoyed the Survivor Series match where Steve Austins career was on the line and Micheals put on a hell of a performance.

So what is your favourite match in the history of the Survivor Series?

I was never a huge fan of the Survior Series PPV. The Elimantion match itself always in my opinion took to many main eventers for the PPV itself to work as functioning PPV.

I did enjoy the tag match last year and the taker/batista HIAC

The Undertaker's debut as the mystery member of Ted DiBiase's team was huge when it was done. He really made a big impression on everyone that night and it was one of those rare moments in wrestling where the hype was justified and didn't disappoint.

I'm not saying that is the greatest SS match ever but for me, it's one of the most memorable.

I liked the "wild card" elimination match in 1995,the Flair/HHH last man standing match in 2005 stands out for me too.

    dont remember that one???

i remember enjoying the 1st elemanation chamber, the one that michaels one but i've never watched it back so maybe it was just the newness of the concept

also i remember enjoying at the time a team bambam jobbing to team of 4 doinks ( none of them being doink ). which i reckon really actually sucked pretty bad but was funny at the time

The wild card match was where heels and faces were put together as a team, you had HBK,Ahmed Johnson,Sid and the Bulldog on one team and Razor Ramon,Dean Douglas,Owen Hart and Yokozuna on the other.

No idea what year it was, but I was a very young mark at the time and the survivors from each match made teams for an ultimate survivor match. Obviously the faces teamed with faces etc, so the faces were Hogan, Warrior and Tito Santana facing Dibiase, Power And Glory and Rick Martel. Needless to say the original 2 man power trip came out victorious against all the odds.

I also loved the original Elimination Chamber match.

Think something happened at the 1997 version also

I was always a big fan of the teams in Survivor Series, and was a bit disappointed that the Final Survival match only happened once.

That was 1990 in Hartford, CT.
Although it was a one man power trip, Warrior had little or no power during his title reign. Vince still had the upper hand and Helwig knew it, thats why he held him up for money nine months later. That was also the horrid PPV that marked the debut of the gobbeldygooker.

I still never understood why the hell Savage was excluded from that PPV entirely when he was in the midst of his feud with the Ultimate Warrior instead of being relegated to a five minute interview, when he teased retirement.

No it wasn't! It was an embarrassment. WCW had a horrid year that year too, but dear lord even the Shockmaster wasn't that embassassing.

It was Mo doink, Mabel doink, Butch doink and Luke doink against Bam Bam, Bastion Booger and The Headshrinkers, when Fatu only weighed about 325lbs instead of the 925 he weighs now! Bananas and bits of turkey flying around the ring. It was terrible! :(

The elimination chamber in 2002 in MSG was fantastic. The crowd made it...JR was fantastic for it...Still remember whole thing in my mind to today

2002 was one of my favourite ppvs ever, Lesna/Big Show was great, short, huge power moves, Heyman screwing Brock out of the title and that incredible F5

In case people didn't know a lot of the matches mentioned here are being featured on a Sky Best of Survivor Series special. Original Elimination Chamber and the debut of the Undertaker are some of the bits on it.

The first SS ppv i seen was the 2001 and i really enjoyed it , the whole invasion angle was gonna end that night, the main event was great jericho nearly costing wwe the match and then angle turning on the alliance . Really enjoyed it.

2002 was also a good year with the EC , Lesnar match was good also.

I like the whole tournament thing in 98 I think.

    When Rock won the title.

Then again, I've always like King of the Ring (done properly, not just the final match at the PPV).

NY crowds always are, I like smart crowds, Chicago, Philly, New Jersey, London, always great crowd atmosphere, loved that Batista got booed at Raw in the UK last week

Personally speaking i loved both the 2000 and 2001 survivor series events, thought they were both quite good!

The 2001 one with the alliance being ok. But still 100 times better than most stories they've built since.

Also I really enjoyed the Diesal/Hart match in 1995. It was such a well put together match and it holds up over time too I think.

I always liked the idea of the SS elimination tag matches but they're rarely all that good.

I don't think 2000 had any elimination mathces? A few good singles ones though. 99 was probably their worst PPV ever. Rubbish 8man tags with little or no storylines involved and an atrocious triple threat for the strap.

1996 was ok, so so tag matches. Superfly showed up for a quick match, Bret/Austin, WWF title match was very good. And the undertaker unveiled some wierd S&M style outfit.

1994 was alright too. Michaels and Diesel were in the opener I think. Bret/Backlund was ok and if you were fan you had a second Taker/Yoko casket match.

1992 had a Bret Hart/HBK match that I think ended with a clean submission win for Hart, can't remember if it was any good.

I always liked the 1988 main event though, just for watching it through glorious nostalgic rose coloured glasses. I think it was around 1995/6 when I found a video shop that had wrestling tapes. Rented that one a fair bit.

Shawnraven, what are some of your favourites ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,143 ✭✭✭D-FENS

Favourite SS moments were obviously Taker's debut, Bret/Austin '96 and Bret/Shawn (no, not that one, the one in '92 that Bret won! ;) )

Best ever though was when Heenan replaced Tully Blanchardstown in '89 because of his drug test firing, came out in that Andre style leotard and was left alone with the Warrior, brilliant. Nobody looked as funny as the Weasel taking a beating. Hope he's doing ok these days, anyone know?

I really like that '97 Bret/Shawn match. It was great, full of emotion, unpredictable and Shawn had a ton of heat. If the finish and everything else was scripted you could very well say it was the best finish ever. I loved it . Everyone got what they wanted out of it....
Vince got attention, got his belt, got his finish and made himself a heel
Bret got his money and was turned super babyface and had so much mommentum going into WCW
Shawn got his heat and his own way.

Everybody was a winner , especially the fans.

How rubbish was the Austin/Hart IC title match at that though ?
Oh and did anyone find some perverse enjoyment from the Kane/Mankind squash match ? I liked it .

That line made me laugh. It was unpredictable alright! Although in saying that Julie Hart did suspect something would happen before the incident actually happened.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,443 ✭✭✭Red Sleeping Beauty

Bret suspected something would happen to. A lot of people did. Quite a few other wrestlers warned Bret not to haev his shoulders on the mat too often and to kick out at the 1count rather than 2. He asked Earl Ebnor to promise to him that he wouldn't screw him.

There's a very good account of the incident here, written by Meltzer.

Without turning this into another Bret/Shawn who was right thread...
God awful match out of all the singles matches they had since about 89-90! Vinny Mac ordered the screwjib, Shawn knew he'd be lucky to leave the Molson Centre alive once the trigger was pulled, and Bret had a fair idea he wasn't going to get his way either regardless if he was promised or not. There was a degree of paranoia on everyone's part.
How rubbish was the Austin/Hart IC title match at that though ?

Austin was only a couple of months away after having his neck broke to be fair, nobody was expecting miracles, and had Owen listened to Austin literally begging for him not to do the inverted piledriver before the match, it would have been a whole lot different.

You didn't answer mah question tho :pac:
What's were your favourite matches or SS PPVs ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,602 ✭✭✭✭ShawnRaven

You didn't answer mah question tho :pac:

I didn't have to! Given the reasoning behind it, it was moot.
What's were your favourite matches or SS PPVs ?

A lot to choose from there. It would either have to be the 20 man tag from 87 with the Young Stallions and The Killer Bees being the survivors, or Hogan, Savage, Hercules, Koko B Ware and Hillbilly Jim vs Bossman, Akeem, DiBiase, Haku & Taylor from 88.

The first one because it was well ahead of it's time for WWE, although the tagged classics version is butchered and not worth watching. The second because it showcased the hell out of Savage while Hogan was cuffed to the ropes and then planted seeds for the Megapowers breakup four months later.

This in one of the my favs

    Survivor Series 2004

Team Orton V Team HHH (winning team took charge of RAW eack week)

I liked the 2003 Survivor Series which is the last one I saw in full. The Team Austin v Team Bishoff match was a good ending to a poor Austin/Bishoff storyline. The other tag match was good as well with Benoit and Cena as the final two survivors.

I didn't really like 2002 that much. I was at the height of my cynical phase when everthing got a  from me. I found the Elimination Chamber too predictable and wanted RVD or Booker to win. I prefered the SS03 Chamber with Goldberg spearing the $hite out of everyone.

The best match is definitely Austin-Hart from 1996. Its one of the best ever from any show. The best storyline was the whole 1998 show.

The Deadly Game/lets do a tournament storyline to put Rock over ?
Reminded me of the WM4 tournament a bit. I think that PPV has the shortest match the WWF ever did which was Rock/Boss Man, 4seconds.

    3 strikes and your out!!!

Shawn Michaels hitting Diesel with the superkick (for the third time) at Survivor Series 1994. Later on the night chucking the tag titles on the ground and leaving the arena in a car. Three nights later Big Daddy Cool defeats Bob Backlund in 8 seconds in win the WWF title (Diesel won all 3 titles in 94).

    Great ppv that was.

Also those Survivor Series teams were awesome.

The Bad Guy's (Razor Ramon, the 1-2-3 kid, Davey Boy Smith,The Headshrinkers (Sionne and Fatu)) vs The Teamsters (Diesel, Shawn Michael, Jeff Jarrett, Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart)

Razor was the left on the team and still won when everybody else was counted out. Classic.

The Undertaker got revenge on Yokozuna. Chuck Norris was there as enforcer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,443 ✭✭✭Red Sleeping Beauty

I think the other 2strikes were at SummerSlam and then on the Action Zone in a tag match against Razor Ramon & 123 kid or it was a 6man against the Smoking Gunns and someone.

It was Shawn, Diesel and Tatanka vs The Smoking Gunns and Lex Luger. It's also on the Wham Bam Bodyslam video that was released.

And with that being my 5000th post, i'm outta here for 2 weeks! :D

I really liked the 2002 Survivor Series. I think I have it on tape somewhere. I went crazy for the main event win for Michaels. I also liked the six-man tag and the short Lesnar-Show match with Lesnar hitting the F-5. The tables match was entertaining too and there's a good comedy moment when Rico is waiting for Jeff to knock him off the apron and waits so long he finally has to shout 'Damn it Jeff!'
