It does make a difference. You need special licenses for hunting protected animals and protected birds but for those that are not protected all you need is a firearm certificate and permission from the person who owns the land you're shooting on.

What range would you think you would be hunting at?? 50yrds 100yrds 200yrds??

Also the caliber of rifle you choose will be determined by what you wnat to shoot, .22lr will be fine for bunnies, crows etc, .22mag would be ok for both the smaller pests and foxes(.17hmr at lesser ranges <70yrds has worked for me), .22hornet might be a bit better suited for your needs, although its a centerfire and the price of ammunition may be of concern. If you only want foxes well al you need to do is search .223 round here to find it is highly thought of round for that purpose.

How much you are willing to spend on the rifle is a factor as well as the scope, and of course no point shelling out for rifle and scope if your rings and bases arent worth a F$£K!!

for Game or vermin, WRITTEN Permission from three farmers. Or one farmer with a big farm in excess of 100 acres.
For Exempted wild anamils eg: Deer special licence from N.P.W.S first.

Then go to local Gardai, apply with relevant paperwork from Firearms dealer.
    and farmers permission.
    Most people start:
    Shot Gun,
    Rifle,
then large calibre rifle in excess of .22/250 and 55grn bullet. eg Deer Hunting round.

Although if person is older than 21 has no previous record can apply for .22 rifle instead of a shotgun should he/she prefer.

Any more questions drop me a line

    cool tackleberrywho thanks,

so do you have to be a certain age to have particular guns or is 16 the standard age?

i was thinkin of nothin to fancy yet maybe an air rifle/.22 etc.. something along those lines til i get some experience.

also does it have to be 3 farmers or 3 landowners with a large area of land?

    thanks;)

good info thanks, explains the power needed.

the more powerful a rifle is the more expensive it is,ya?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,138 ✭✭✭Tomebagel

also is the age limit different depending on the size of then gun?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,276 ✭✭✭endasmail

not to sure about that one ,i do no the more powerful the bullets the more expensive they are ,thats why IMO your better off getting a .22 to start and getting used to the whole shooting idea ,im sure ya have to work your way up through the different caliber rifles ,its totally down to the discretion of your local super though
