Is the PS3 really region locked for Blu-ray?

Foolishly, I recently bought a set of Blu ray discs on amazon.com - from the US - without checking if they were region free or not.

In blissful ignorance, I put one into the (European) PS3 and it played as normal...

Later I noticed that the discs were marked Region A on the packaging and a check of the amazon site confirmed this.

    So, the following possibilities arise:

    - the discs are not really region A despite what the packaging says
    - the PS3 is not really region locked for Blu ray
    - I've got some funny system software version (and thus should never update again)

    Any thoughts?

This is the disc set in question:

    Any thoughts?

Yeah it is region free I play both US and European on mine. Although as the US ones are made for NTSC tvs. Apparently there is supposed to be a difference in the quality as a standard tv here is pal but I have a HDTV so no problems.

Not all Blurays are region free. The PS3 is most definately region locked for Bluray movies.

Some musnt be as mine works fine with both regions. Have a bout 4 or 5 region 1 DVDs and a few Region 2 ones. All of them work in the PS3.

As an example, Terminator 2 says Region A on the box but it works perfectly in my Region B Playstation 3. A Region A version of A Nightmare Before Christmas wont work on a European PS3. I would take what the back of any Bluray boxes say with a pinch of salt.

Take a look at the following site, http://bluray.liesinc.net/ this shows what will work and what wont work. It lists When We Left Earth - The NASA Missions as being region free

Not all Blurays bought in the United States and Canada will work on European Playstation 3's.

Are you talking about DVD's or Bluray discs? Region 1 and 2 doesn't exist for Bluray

    Quick question on the topic..

If you installed Linux on the PS3 and then VLC - could you force it to play any region?

i think so, but you don't have access to gfx acceleration in linux on the PS3 do you? That could affect playback.

You are correct. It will more than likely be like a slideshow without graphics acceleration.

Is there anyway the regions aren't inforced at the moment ,because there isn't that many factories making the discs ?
So they need to make them for all regions to increase production.

It's down to the studio. Some studios enforce the regions, like Fox, while others don't, like warners.

The PS3 itself is region locked.

Like the man says, the consoles themselves ARE locked, but not all blu ray discs are. Most american discs will work, as far as I know Fox are the only studio that region lock their blu rays. This is a good site to check what what US discs will work on your PS3.

Thanks all for your helpful replies and insight.

The bit that still perplexes me is that the discs were clearly marked as Region A but yet it seems that they are in fact Region free. Now, maybe I just got lucky and this was an error by the publisher but from tallaghtoutlaw's comments it seems that this isn't uncommon.

I can understand that some discs will be region free, but why would they deliberately mark them as being otherwise?

Almost all blu-rays produced for sale in the states will be marked Region A regardless of whether they will play in other regions or not.

Check out this site too as its a compiled list of region A disks that have been tested for other region consoles etc.

Also take a look at AxelMusic. They have a section dedicated to "region free" blu-rays. Some are Region A but have been confimed to work region free.
