Transferring from UK force to PSNI

    Hi all, 1st time poster.

I'm a serving Constable in Liverpool but want to move home in the near future.

Having no luck getting sense from both Consensia or Recruitment so I thought i'd come here.

Does anyone know people who have transferred to PSNI or what the transfer entails.

I believe that we must go through the whole process from start to finish and take a chance in the 50:50 pool.

Anyone know if this is still the case or likely to change in the future.

    Cheers in advance.

Yeah I think that is how it works, I met a few guys from the Met and strathclyde who went through it but then their training only lasted less than 10 weeks I think (was a few years ago), just a bit of a top up explaining differences in legislation

atm as far as i know you have to be ranked sergeant or higher in order to do a straight transfer. if you want to get in as constable you have to apply like all us "civilians" and hope to get in that way, but if and when you do get in, you only do 5 weeks of phase 1 training, as you will already have done you're training with you're current force. there was something posted on here a while back that gave more detail, but thats the general gist of it.

i think once they stop 50:50 then you will be able to do a straight transfer as a constable.

it is not due to end until 2011, as far as i know but it looks like it will have to go on for longer Policing & Justice legislation shouldnt change your position

50:50 could possibly end up going beyond 2011 if there does end up being some kind of stoppage in recruitment.

I actually created an account to post you on this.

Im a serving officer, i have a few years done and alot of lads that have come accross from the uk forces get a big surprise. All if not have at least sgt rank as its a straight transfer in and a few weeks in the training centre retraining.

Ive alot of the mates who are either moving accross the water or in the process of applying.

Dont get me wrong I truly love my job but the way things are done here are completely different. Ive a skipper who has just done a year and is on his way back. Hes a great lad and will be truly missed, the type of guy that leads from the front and has your back. If I could suggest lift the phone to one of the stations here speak to someone who has transferred accross and get a good idea of what your dealing with.

Probably doesnt help you much but be cautious as they say!!

Thanks for your help mate. Appreciate it.

What are the biggest differences that transferees are experiencing?

To be honest all the transferres have rank sgt and above, dont know anyone who has come accross as a con as they have to go through the training centre, which to someone who has service will drive you bonkers.

Main difference is the paperwork and the way things would be run. Sgts have alot of daily reponsibility now so if they like getting out and about theyre generally doing paperwork. And one thing we love generating here is paperwork.

Most districts have a decent personnel department. Give them a ring and ask them to have someone call you that has transferred in.

    Best of luck

what about transferring from the Gardaí? is it the same as straight transfer if
your a sergeant, also can a member of An Garda Síochana carry over their service to the PSNI? Is there any EX-Gardaí members whom are now PSNI Officers willing to share their wisdom on the pro's and con's of leaving Gardai and becoming a PSNI officer. Thanks in advance

Currently there is no system to transfer on a full time basis to the PSNI from AGS, this is also the same if you wanted to travel in the other direction.

This was briefly discussed before here. Having spoken to someone who transferred from mainland Britain to the PSNI (as I considered it myself at one point), he said that he was enjoying the lifestyle, but that the paperwork and IT was about 10 years behind forces on the mainland, and urged caution to anyone looking to move over.

I guess it depends on what you're used to.
