Why would anyone see you ?
Some GP practices have a counsellor who works out of the same building, I know mine does
so who is to know why you are calling to the practice.
Of pick one who is a fair bit of distance from you.

If you don't want your GP to refer you, why not pick up the phone book and contact one directly?

its not so much people seeing me going the gp as people seeing at the actual counselling. I went t before once and this put me off. I know i shouldn't be like this but if i wasn't like this i wouldn't need counseling.

Also i found it hard to actually come out and say the things that are bothering me. i guess i feel a bit ashamed or embarrassed

Yeah, you could just be going for an appointment, for anything. To collect a prescription for your nana, who needs a new one every week cuz her dosage gets changed - if anyone even notices, and bothers to ask! This is just an element of paranoia you should ignore and try and get the help you need.

    Go to your GP

its insane that noone would ever think of going :(

and anything you tell your GP, or a counseller is confidential

Dont feel paranoid, you're makin a good step just plannin it, so well done, and good luck :)

Surely anyone who would see you at the counsellor's office (which I would presume would be in a health centre or a hospital anyway, not a building with a big neon 'Counsellor!' sign outside it) would be there for the same reasons as you? They'd be in the same boat, so why would this be an issue?

sometimes when we are anxious and very self aware we think people might notice things. when really people are so full of their own thoughts that you could probably drop dead in front of the councillors office and people would be so pre-occupied with themselves they wouldnt notice you.

there are many reasons why people go to councilling. some people go for career guidance. in this day and age, half the world is doing it.

this is the first step in learning not to care so much what the world thinks, and instead thinking of what you need. it may be hard, but you are going to have to overcome your fear and learn to rationalise it. in reality, 99% of the population couldnt care less if you attend therapy. its not the big deal it used to be.

feel the fear and do it anyway. you can do it.
