    h ave a lapierre rcr 500:

    http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=38&idproduct=17880

i wash and degreased her yesterday, and ever since the wash the back brake isn't springing back like it should, its like the spring has gone la\y on her, as a direct result of the wash?!

normally the brake cable is good n taught, but there is slack onthe line,(under the cross bar)

any ideas what this might be, or whats involved to get her back to full health?

    thanks
    ed

Sounds like you need to tighten the cable. It should be fairly taut along the top tube.

There should be barrel adjuster on the brake lever - try turning that to see if that picks up the slack.

no idea of the sort of brakes, but free the cable from brakes. The calipers/cantilvers should open fully, if not there's the problem.
If they are opening and spring is strong, the problem is probably the cable - try pulling it back and forth, there should be neglible resistance. Check for any kinks in the cable, if not it might just be an obstruction you can lubricate. Otherwise you may need to replace the cable.

You didn't by any chance knock the return spring out of position during washing did you?
Try squeezing the calipers in by hand and see if there's any resistance - if not, its possible you unwittingly released the spring from its clip

+1 on souter. could be that the cable needs replacing. otherwise remove the cable, the old one might be corroded. you'll know when the cable has been removed, b spqueezing the brake lever whether there is something wrong with the lever itself.

cable prob needs bit of vaseline inside the housing, if its an old cable replace it and lube it up before putting it in.

    Two things to check:

    1. If the nut through which the cable connects with the brake caliper has not popped out of its slot. If it has, then the calipers won't open and the cable will be slack along the frame. This does happen to me occasionally after I do a wash, always creating temporary confusion until I realise what's happened.

    2. If the cable has not popped out of the rear cable mount on the frame.
