I know it might be a bit late but we want to go skiing again.
I don't have a clue where to go or when to go but all I know is that we have a tight budget. I'd like to plan it myself to save us some $$$. Anyone have any ideas? And im/we are low to intermediate level skiers. Thanks.

Hi there, check out directski.com and see what they have on offer. There are serious deals to be had at the moment because the tour operates numbers are way down. They are slashing their prices and offering deals like 2 for 1 liftpasses etc.

Choose your date and see what locations they offer.

€2,276.00 for 4 adults in Bansko, Bulgaria. 3 star b&b with two double rooms, Boots, ski's and lift passes. and insurance too. Looks like a good deal to me. Has anyone ever been to Bankso, what kind of runs are there? thanks

Yes it looks like a good deal but ive heard people describe Bansko as abit spread out and more expensive than the other resorts
Im currently going to borovets this season and we are getting it for roughly €2,200 for 4 people + all ski equipment + lift passes. Also, Borovets Food+Drink is alot cheaper than Bankso

I wouldnt worry to much about what star rating the accomodation has as they never usually are what they say in bulgaria

Yeah to get it so cheap u gotta DIY your ski trip. Avoid going with tour operators if your on a tight budget. I suggest Borovets if you still want a cheap enough ski trip as i have been there before and loved it. Loved it so much im going back in Jan :)

Check out these sites for info on bulgaria

Thanks again tripp, some nice red runs there :D, is your flight from Dublin to Plovdiv? and which airline? Thanks.

Also, check out www.cis-valcenis.com. The price quoted is for full board and accommodation, entertainment AND lift pass. You have to get there, the cheapest way is normally through paris and an overnight train to Modane, but it's always worth looking at Grenoble and Turin, and you have to pay for ski hire and your bar bill.

It's great value, lunch and dinner are 3 or 4 courses with unlimited wine, and it's great craic.

Thanks guys for all the comments but i've decided its gona be Borovets this year.

Right, this is how it works out at the moment:

Cork to Dub : 90e (inc return)
Dub to Sofia : 505.80e (inc return)
Taxi to Borovets : 080.00e (inc return)
    nice Hotel for 7nights : 642.00e
    Ski's,Boots,Lift Pass, Ski School : 731.04e

    Total : 1966.84e

Does anyone know if there are buses which travel to Borovets from Sofia airport?
The 1euro Cork to Dublin flights turned out to be 90 in total and we have to sleep in the airport on the way back.
Strangely if you rent boots, skis and get a lift pass it costs 10 euro more per person then if you get a full package (the same but with lessons).
Tripp, did you rent your ski's last time or did you bring your own, and if you did rent them, how much did they cost you? Thanks :D

EDIT: I forgot to mention I had a bad fall yesterday and f***ed up my ankle... out for 6 weeks, so I moved to the holiday from end of December to start/mid Jan. but that was mainly because it was a hell of a lot cheaper :D

Depending on what hotel you are staying at. They do Transfers for you. which is included in the price.
Also be very carefull if your getting a taxi from the airport. Agree the price before you leave ( Get it in writing if possibe )the airport because ive heard from people that used taxis from the airport and the driver changed his price when they got to the Destination.
Aww they dont go direct from cork to sofia? :( that sucks!
We rented our Ski/Snowboards Equipment and i think they cost about 150 levs ( roughly €70 ) for 6 days
The Ski Passes work out at about 50 levs ( €25 Euro for a full day) or 25 levs ( €13 Euro for a half day)

What date u heading out cause ill be there 24th Jan - 31st. Sounds like your going earlier than me tho :)

Don't some taxis have fixed prices? think its 40 euro one way or something. SOFIA AIRPORT TRANSFER.
Nope there's no flight from Cork to Sofia :( I think there might be one from Cork to Plovdiv with a stop over but thats 400e pp which is a bit ott.
I found this handy little thing which gives you prices on gear / ski passes: Clicky.
    Didn't you just buy a 6 day pass, It's more than 40e cheaper (109euro v 150euro) ?
Last question, Is there a way to ski all the way down into the village or do you have to take the gondola back down?

All I'm gona do is check the snow fall and i'm pretty much ready to book :D

Yes they have Fixed Prices, but ive heard on other forums that the drivers sometimes overcharge etc. Just warning ya :)

Nah we bought half day lift passes because if we bought full day passes, We would be wrecked after a few days. Plus the half day passes go from 12-4. So when we are going up on the mountain, Most of the people who got the full days are having there lunch so we have most of the slopes to ourselves :D

It depends on what level skier you are. If you are intermediate you can go straight up the Gondola and yes you can ski straight back to town if you want or you can do some of the runs up there and get drag/chair lifts to the top of the run

only 4 hours a day?, I plan on doing a bit more then that hehe.
I'm still searching for a cheap hotel cause the one I was looking into is booked full or i might just bring a tent...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 398 ✭✭Tripp

have you made any further plans? :P
Because the snow is pouring down in Borovets and the other resorts
Getting info from ppl that live beside Boro and they have 30cm+ of snow :D
