Exterior wall insulation

We're renovating a detached property built circa 1900(2000 sq ft). The walls are solid masonry, about 1.5 - 2 foot thick I reckon. We want to insulate as much as possible so decided to go for inner insulation on all exterior walls(along with attic insulation and high U windows).
However, our quotes for inner wall insulation are in the region of 15,000:eek:. At this price, it doesn't seem viable to me(it'll take decades to recoup). Also, one of the builders reckoned that this insulation wont add much and that good roof/window insulation are the most effective.
Is it worth insulating the external walls if this is the cost? The proposed work would be dry lining with kooltherm or something equivalent.

Is the 15k figure to include for replacing services on inner face of exterior walls, replace window boards, drylining and vapour barrier installation, skimming walls, possible replacement of coving to ceilings, repainting throughout and new skirting through out?
The work is quite extensive, but is worth it!

Quote includes all those points apart from painting/decorating. Not too sure about window boards so will check. We're also getting new windows so I guess this will need to be coordinated.
It may be the case that the budget wont stretch to this so we'll see if it can be negotiated down a bit. That being said, I dont want to cut corners just to reduce the cost - do it right or not at all.
I'm still trying to justify the outlay - does it make a big difference to the insulation of the house?

Insulated boards are approx €32 a board 50mm composite 2.4m x 1.2 m.steel mushrooms 18 per board.bonding ,scrim tape ,mini mesh to reveals , air tightness tape to windows and doors and labour to fit.60 to 70 bags of hardwall ,Skim coat the lot.Are you doing ceilings as well?.
I am presently doing a new build 200 sq m with a mix of 2.45 ,2.95 and 3.4 m high ceilings ,150mm rafterloc 40 sq m only ,50mm slabs to all ceilings and all external walls , foil slabs to internal walls ,batrooms green slabs and a couple of pink around stove area ,and the materials alone are coming in over €10k so if €15k is total price including materials then it's not that far of the mark.
    My labour quote is €6k

Where did you meet this "builder"? Did he arrive on a horse?
"Insulation won't work" - thats the silliest thing I've heard in years!

Invest in insulation, it has a huge return. I've foil in the floor, walls and roof and a candle would literally heat my house.

I love a few hours of sunshine as I save so much in heating if the sun shines!

Don't listen to this "builder" - employ someone who knows their stuff and invest in insulation.:)
I'd recommend a 25-40mm air gap between the new insulation / drylining and the existing walls.
