Surveillance legislation to go before Dáíl
    Saturday, 15 November 2008 13:18
The Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has said he is glad that proposed legislation on covert surveillance is to go before the Dáil shortly.

He said the new legislation would allow evidence gathered by the gardaí through surveillance to be admissible in the courts.

Speaking on RTÉ radio, Mr Murphy again extended his sympathy to the family of Shane Geoghegan, who was shot dead last weekend near his home in Limerick in a case of mistaken identity.

He said the incidence of gun crime in Limerick had fallen by 60% in recent months but he acknowledged the drop did not take away from the situation of feuding gangs in the city.

The Garda Commissioner also said the level of garda visibility on the streets was higher than ever before

    ****

Have no doubt in your mind this is not directed for 'criminals' this will be directed at the general public. In 40 years we haven't solved the so called drugs or crime issue...wonder why.... now we need more legislation to solve it yes sure we do of course.....surveillance...spying...and get a load of this one below same from rte newsMinister for Justice Dermot Ahern says the Government will rule nothing out which is consistent with the rule of law in tackling armed criminal gangs.

    '
Mr Ahern was speaking during has told a Dáil debate on the killing of Shane Geoghegan. Watch the Dáil debate live.

The 28-year-old fitter and rugby team captain was murdered in Limerick over the weekend when gunmen apparently mistook him for a man associated with one of the feuding gangs in the city. (mistook him for a man associated a likely story a very likely one...)

TDs from all sides of the House conveyed their sympathies to Shane Geoghegan's family.

Mr Ahern said the murder had invoked horror and revulsion and said no resources would be spared in tracking down those involved.

He said the forthcoming covert surveillance legislation will enable gardaí to enter and place bugging devices on private property.'

You hear that people bugging and surveillance...see the way it works for those not already aware and im sure most are here is they come up with a problem ohhhh the people had massive amount of outrage over the incident then they come up with draconian legislation they wanted to pass all along you getting that and you know something no one will give a monkey's too busy getting excited over ireland new zealand too busy getting excited over some soccer match or what they are doing tonight..

too busy until they find themselves in court wondering how they got there over a minor infringement. This is how people lose their rights they don't stand up for them, they have become zombies too addicted to their personal toys and gadgets while their rights are taken from under them...

People let me tell you this is gone beyond the border now we'll have to drastically change our reliance on the system or its game over for all of us.

You better ring your representative and tell them not to vote for this, when your getting dragged into court and sent to prison over something so minor when this becomes a police state you'll be sorry you never took action

I think the OP is under the mistaken impression that the Police shot that guy in Limerick

It seems he either thinks the guy actually was the intended target, or honestly thinks that mistaken identity really is the most likely explanation.

Well you could clarify what you meant by that, if you want. Are you implying that he was involved with the gangs, contrary to all the evidence?

    Oi Casey,

Clarify what you mean now please.

If you think there is some larger conspiracy in this mans death, then I (and the rest of us) would love to hear it.

If you are just throwin assumptions around the place then bear in mind that the onus is on you to back up these claims.
