has anyone any recommendations as to which route it would be better to go down in this current climate - i have a offer from a big 4 accounting firm for a tax position however i feel i would have a good chance of securing a apprenticeship with one of the big law firms too (this would obviously involve doing fe1s etc first). i did business and legal by the way - i feel i would be comfortable in either profession to be honest - i'm leaning towards tax because I'm not hearing great things about the amount of trainee solicitors being let go right now.... thanks in advance for any advice :)

If you have an offer from a big 4 company I would say take it and count yourself rather lucky, especially considering the current state of the world.

Also if you yet haven't secured an offer from the other place this could take anything from weeks to months. The first company are not going to wait forever while you wonder about another job you haven't got yet.

    Hope it works out :)

yeah thats my thinking currently. plus i think the tax/accountancy is probably better to be going down rather than solicitors.

Definetely go fo the tax. Too many solicitors & not enough work at moment.

Why do you think you have a good chance? You know it's an absolute lottery to secure a traineeship now, with the numbers applying and level of candidates. Tough times, take the accounting route my friend :)

Take the Big 4 tax route. Focus on VAT. Think about it. The Coporate Tax people will do all the hours with the complex tax computations, bring them to the VAT people who will just say yes or no. Not as exciting, but much more demand for VAT people.

fair point. however i believe that currently it is being retained after you finish your traineeship that is the bigger problem.

i did talk to a couple people working in vat who enjoyed it plus there is a big legal aspect to it as well which would appeal to me.
