    Hi,

Why would we be getting black spots on a ceiling? Room is ventilated and heated. Attic is insulated. We dont get this in evry room only one.

    Thanks in advance.

Is the blackness flaky or powdery? If so, its probably mildew or similar.

It may be caused by a cold bridge or leak.

    Thanks Victor,

Its small spots. I just rubbed it and most of it comes off but leaves a trace.

What do you mean by a leak or cold bridge?

    Thanks.

Sounds like mould if its easy to brush off.
Is it in a bathroom or bedroom ceiling?

Check the insulation in the attic, directly above the stain. It may be uninsulated.

Yeah its mould and its in a bedroom. I checked the attic insulation and its intact.

Its around the perimeter of the room towards the front of the house.

New build? does the wife leave damp clothes on radiators for drying? Maybe invest in a Dehumidifier....

Aldi recently were selling these. They normally come around again for sale.

House is about 30 years old.

No clothes drying in the room. The window is opened every morning.

The ceiling has not been painted in over 5 years?

Maybe if i sand it down and paint with a mould resistant paint?

This will work - but it only hides the problem, its not a cure.

When did this start? - why now in a 30 year old house?
(New soffit / fascia, or new en-suite installed? internal Renovations?)

The mould is caused by a lack of ventilation, as moist warm wet air hits the cold surface of the ceiling. The moisture condensates and the mould grows on the damp surface.

You could increase the insulation thickness over the perimeter ( ensure 50mm ventilation gap is maintained)

    Thanks for the advice.

New facia and soffit were installed about 5 years ago when I bought the place. Not sure if there was an issue before that? We have had the mould problem since we moved in in this particular ceiling.

I'll try adding insulation as you suggested.

    Thanks!
