VW to Nissan?

Looking to change the wife’s car for ’09. Current car is a 07 VW Jetta 1.6 102 bhp petrol with 11K km, we usually change it every two years.

Narrowed it down to a Jetta Comf 1.4 TSI 122 bhp, Qashqai SE 1.5dCi 106 bhp or perhaps some variant of the new Golf.

After a bit of shopping around I finally got some realistic prices and plan to do a deal over the next few days.

It has come down to preference; stay with VW perceived quality or go to Nissan, also taking into account residual value in another two years. The Qashqai will be cheaper to run and tax and that diesel engine has had some good reviews.

    Any comments?

Buy the car you like the most and can afford. Too many people are concerned about the right badge rather than the right car these days.

    Bazz is spot on,

Also personally myself I don't see the point in buying the same model again, all it is imo is changing number plates. Also the Jetta is coming to the end of it's life in the next 12 months or so as the MKVI Golf is now on sale.

Maybe that is a better option if you want to stick with VW?

I personally think that over the last five years that nissan have went downhill, well mainly since renault hold a majority stake.
Vw are a great car but you are paying for a badge, can get the same vehicle without the badge and less price, ie Skoda and Seat.
I have been looking at the Kia ceed for the last month or two and very impressed by the test drives and stuff, seams a great car. I have been holding on to see how the market goes and vrt.

Yes buying the same car again might be a little boring, but the new TSI engine would be a fair bit quicker. I had thought about the Jetta and as you point out there is likely to be a new model for 2010.

Yes I agree, Nissan have been going downhill for quite a while imo. But the Qashqai is selling very well; it's their most successful model in a while.

What about a diesel Golf? €104 motor tax for the 2.0 TDI 110 bhp. The more powerful and therefore better 140 model is €156 to tax.

Having said that I hate diesel so I think you should go for the 1.4 TSI with the teriffic DSG 'box and these are €156 for tax, even the most powerful 160 bhp model.

The manual 1.4 TSIs are €302 on motor tax.

EDIT: the above data is for the Mk 6 Golf only, the Jetta is similar to the Mk5 Golf on CO2 i.e. it is higher than the above.

Yeah I agree, 1.4 TSI 160BHP DSG Sportsline Jetta looks like great fun.

Isnt it a 7 speed DSG too?

The dealers don't seem to have the 2.0 TDI 110 bhp on their price lists yet. I also would prefer the petrol and would love the DSG box, but it would add over €1,300, too much for the budget.

Although if we went with the Qashqai I think I would be happy with the diesel.

Sorry, I meant to say all my data is for the Mk 6 Golf, in my previous post I wasn't very clear initially, but this has now been edited.

And Tony Burke, the DSG box is 6 speed for the diesel Mk 6 Golf and all Jettas, but 7 speed for the Mk 6 Golf 1.4 TSI.

Lastly, I would not advise anyone to buy a new Jetta, this car should be replaced in the next year or so, and even if it isn't you'll be buying the saloon version of the soon to be old Golf, not the new Golf, so you'll be getting an out of date car. It's also too close to the Passat in price, and doesn't hold its value anything like as well as other models in the VW range, especially the Golf on which it is heavily related to.
