Bought BMW320d SE last Aug, 06, splashed out a bit as always wanted one, anyway have had it back to garage two times, first time it went dead in fastlane of M50, no warning lights, nothing, total black out, had to free wheel into hard shoulder across 4 lanes in rush hr!!..brought it in and they said there was a glitch in the computer, but couldn't see anything wrong so they replaced it anyway, which was fine.

Last night coming home, again on M50,red battery light comes on, not really in a position to stop so kept goin as car was running, as got near my turn, radio started going on and off, lights blinking on and off, needles on speedo going up and down, airbag lights coming on, until finally..dead..turns out to be altenator..

Now after 3 months and these experiences, i'm wondering have i got the runt of the batch that came off the line!!..

luckily i have a warranty,it has FBMWSH, bought from main BMW garage, which i have to say have very good service so far but has anyone had any issues like this..suppose just a bit worrying really..

read up on altenators and they should last over 100k miles, about 40k on mine..

Of course it is possible, there is no car maker out there that makes a 100% faultess car.

Thankfully your's is covered by warranty.

These types of faults were notorious on the early version of the E46, is yours a E46 or E90? Did you buy new or 2nd hand?

as i said, service is great from BMW but suprised by the problems i''ve had...have bought 2k primeras that caused me less trouble, but luckily all under warranty!

Could be a Monday morning or Friday evening car. ;) Every manufacturer produces them. You're just one of the unfortunate few to suffer the consequenses.
