    hi,
i'm not doing ID nursing. but i was class rep for a few years for general nursing and might be able to help you. i work part-time as a care assistant in an ID residential care home.

The course in first year is very intense and the hours will be close on 30 a week, sometimes less, rarely more. This is in order to prepare you for your first clinical placement which is in january of first year and lasts for 6 weeks. This first 6 weeks will be spent on one unit. After that you have 6 weeks college, 6 weeks placement again which may be shorter specialist placements, and then back to college for 3 weeks or so for study and exams.
When on placement, you could be doing a 5 day 8-4.30 placement, or a 3 day 8am-9pm placement. Placement is 35 hours a week, all hours missed due to illness must be repaid to the clinical area. You will have exams at xmas and summer and about 3-4 assignments throughout the year.

Second year is much the same formula. Third year is similar but with 4 extra weeks placement thrown in.
Fourth year starts with 6 weeks placement. Followed by 3 weeks college. Final exams. Xmas Holidays, and then paid rostered placement for the last 8 months of your education for which you will be paid €25,500 pro rata.

Overall the course is quite challenging, and is time intensive compared to other courses.
It is very rewarding though if you have the right personality.
ID Nursing is a really unique type of nursing though because you have the ability to affect positive change and development long term across a persons life as you are working with the same clients for a long period of time. I really love working with the clients in my part-time job and would strongly consider doing a post-grad in ID.

If you've anymore questions, let me know and i'll try to answer.

    Dave

Have to agree with my friends assesment of the nursing degree course..its a tough 4 years but its rewarding ..I'm one of the Psych. students and I decided to do nursing because I wanted to do something constructive..:)..
but its not all hard work theres a good social group and dont forget nights out in coppers .. You make some new friends and the other students if you know any doing the course are quiet helpful with eassays and the fouth years out on placment(most of them) will help you with your assignments ...all you have to do is ask..:D.. only draw back is paid roster placement is only 9 months long and you have 2 big assignments to submit while your out there working..but I'm sure if its what you want to do go for it...:)
