The exhaust on my car is rattles and my mechanic told me its badly worn. To get it fixed i'm going to need to bring it to an exhaust centre.

My brother was telling me that i wouldn't have to and i could still drive my car.

What do you think, should i get it fixed soon or wait until next year before the nct.

Well it will have to be done for the NCT anyway so ya might aswell get it done now. There's no immediate risk like it won't do any damage to the rest of your car by leaving it though. Probably not great for the environment if the cat converter is damaged.

Chances are something else will go wrong before the NCT anyway (bloody dam cars!!) so you might as well get it done now so you don't have double expense before your NCT!

Thats what my brother was saying. He was saying that its nothing to do with the engine, and being a 99 car, and i'm a learner, i might get more problems in the future, and that it would be better to save the money for more serious repairs and a new car.

And random, thats what my sister was saying. She told me to fix it sooner rather than later because then maybe i won't have as much for repairs next year.

Given that your mechanic hasn't fixed it, i'm assuming that there are holes in the exhaust, and it's not just loose. If you plan to drive/sell the car after the nct next year, you might as well get it sorted now - it'll be costing you a little in fuel economy.
