Cheap hosting shouldn't be a problem just go with one of the american hosters just make sure that they are fast enough. for fast and cheap you could go with a content managment system like joomla or drupal they have lots of free themes to change the look of the site so as long as you don't mind your site looking like someone elses you will be up and ready in a few minutes. now all you have to do is fill it with text! and images.

I was with these guys a few years back and they where really good. I'm currently hosted in Ireland as this will help with SERP's.

You could find some nice plugins for wordpress and that's nice & easy to setup.

Regarding Flash, if you don't know how to do it yourself or aren't willing to pay for a very good programmer/designer to do you up a site in it, stay away. Flash is something that only looks good if done properly. Also it's not very accessible and I find it a pain in the ass tbh. Almost 90% of the time I will leave a flash site withing 5 seconds unless I'm impressed.

    :)

Re: using something like Silvelight, which is something that requires the viewer to install software, similar to flash. Alot of people who are unfamilaiar with installing software will choose not to view the site. So it isn't always the best way to go

If you want hassle free work definitely go with Wordpress. It extremely easy to edit the PHP files and there are hundreds of themes and plugins out there.

If you know your Dreamweaver, why not just build your own one? Apart from Dreamweaver's speed (which ain't that bad), wouldn't you rather have something you built yourself?

If you're looking for someting simple & quick, I used iWeb on my Mac & had it done in one night. PM me if you'd like to have a look at my efforts.

my site is built in iweb, not finished and not anything serious, but works

issue with iweb is that it converts everything into images, including the text

    Precisely. Well said.

Again, spot on. The file structure of the folder that iWeb produces is an absolute nightmare. Also as stcstc pointed out it converts everything into images which means that your site will certainly not be search engine friendly.

I love all things Mac, but iWeb... steer clear if you want to create a serious site.

iweb creates nice enough looking stuff but as already noted its html layout and the way it treates images and text is just ****e, shame really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,424 ✭✭✭440Hz

It is a shame!! As you said, the look of the resulting websites in iWeb is not bad at all, and its user friendly, quick and easy. But not web-friendly in the slightest and most definitely not developer friendly. Biggest code nightmare you could imagine, stuff all over the gaf!

hmmmmmmmm thanks all.....i may just write an artistically minimalist(barebones->low effort) site......so for a hosting/url provider.....(no site creation needed) any CHEAP reliable suggestions?

If your going to host your site i would go with webhostingpad.com they are cheap and their hosting accounts have loads of space unlike godaddy, their support is also good. I got good deal that i can host all my sites and it cost like 200 dollars for 2 years. you can see the features they have here
    http://www.webhostingpad.com/hosting-features.html

As far as building a site use joomla , its a great CMS and easy to use, you can get lots of templates for it and many plugins and its free

    Hope this helps
    ;)
