    hey

Ive always had this problem with iphoto, just never figured out what im doing wrong, so maybe someone can help
i connect my camera, then open up iphoto and it asks me if i want to import, which i do. It imports all my photos fine, but if i did a search of my macbook thru finder for a particular photo it always shows up twice. Ive only imported once...it happens with all my photos. The duplicates are saved in different folders..one in iphoto->data->2008 etc.. and the other in iphoto->original->2008 etc.

In iphoto itself each photo appears only once. Its only thru finder i see thats its duplicated. I havent made any changes to the photos either.

    anyone know why?
    thanks:pac:

iPhoto creates a thumbnail of each photo you import, this might account for the duplicate. Are both files the same size ? This is a way to tell, if one of the files is large then it's probably the original while the other may be smaller so it would be the thumbnail.

It's more efficient for iPhoto to create thumbnails to allow you to see a quick view of your pics when you load up the app. Otherwise if you had several thousand high definition photos - like me - then they would need to load every time you started it up which would a) take a long long time and b) quickly gobble up all your memory !!

Almost forgot, iPhoto never alters the original image, it saves a difference file for each image you edit and then applies that difference when you load the picture to view full size or to print.

ah that may be it then, i just checked and the duplicates are different sizes..one is only 60kb which i guess would be the thumbnail.
thanks..i was about go thru and delete all the duplicates, that would have been a pain esp if i had deleted the original larger sizes :D

It's a 'feature' and it's not only the thumbnails.
If you do edits, let it be a rotation for alignment correction or anything, you end up with a duplicate in iPhoto's repository, keeping the original.

I personally hate it so I don't use it, nothing beats the old way of well organized directories in a filesystem, occasionally combined with Spotlight.

If you like iPhoto, but want to do some deduping this will help you out:
