Temperature-controlled bulb?

    Hey there all.

I'm currently rigging up a wooden box to keep a 5 gallon plastic bucket for home-brewing. I'm planning on putting in a 40w bulb to keep it warm, as someone else who used to do it used this way. So I'm thinking of rigging up a thermostat (of sorts) to turn the light off once the temperature reaches 292/293K, as I dont want the temp above that.

Any ideas on how to go about it? Where could I get such a thermostat?

Easily done - My question is though why do you want the temperature not to exceed room temperature? 292K is around 20 celcius yes?

Why cant you store your home brew in any sort of regulated room with air conditioning or room which has a stat in place?

Problem is that like most hairbrained schemes and boys things I come up with - buying drums, R/C Aircraft, Weights racks - is that they get shifted out to the shed... No messing up the house :pac:

The shed gets pretty cold at night, so I was hoping to keep it warm this way.

you could set it up using a relay and a thermistor. easy enough set up. means too that there would be much power needed to keep it running

The bulb probably would do the job, if you put some sort of insulation around the vessel, so once the heat gets in, it stays inside.... I would also try to minimise the losses around the bulb, while still leaving a decent air gap between the bulb and surrounding materials....

You could always forget about the bulb and fit a single immersion heating element, if your tank was sturdy enough.... these should also be very cheap.

Why not mount a copper cylinder type thermostat on the drum to maintain the temperature at a desired level. in a plumbing wholesaler these must be really cheap.... http://www.vhsdirect.co.uk/site/product.cfm?id=26C4FEC1-FF9E-F406-5269E1701BD2DB2E

I would be more inclined to go for an on/off temperature controller, something like RS 461-165 would do the job i would say. its an extra €12 for the liquid probe...
