Can't get a job

I can't get a job anywhere. I've no experience. Sales jobs advertising everywhere but all looking for two years experience. I've done a few interviews, even a few second round interviews, but they don't even contact you afterwards. Shops not recruiting. I've tried them all. Me and half the rest of the nation, it seems. I'm 38, male. My spirit is breaking. I can take a good bit of rejection. But where does it end? Nobody seems to want a good honest hard worker.

I need money. I need a job. I wanted to study next year, go back to college maybe. But I won't be able to afford it. That's hard, to want to go and study, to better yourself, but to be unable to because you've no money, and nobody will give you a job. There seems to be no opportunities at all.

Where are the jobs? Where can I go?

Surely at 38 you have experience in something?

As MagicMarker has said, surely at 38 you must have some work experience in something?

You can't take that personally OP, I couldn't tell you how many jobs I've gone for where I haven't received any response after interviews in spite of any number of promises to the contrary.

All I can say is chin up OP, I imagine a lot of people are having similar difficulties right now, so try not to take it so hard, keep applying for jobs, that's really all anyone can do in this situation, and eventually you'll crack it.

out of curiousity, where are you looking for jobs? I'm assuming you're keeping an eye on local papers, but have you looked online at all? www.jobs.ie, www.monster.ie, www.irishjobs.ie list loads of jobs and I'm constantly being e-mailed with notices about new jobs, so if you haven't already checked them out i'd highly recommend it.

    Best of luck!

What about doing a FAS course and training for
something else ; plus, they pay you while doing
    the course.

I'm not trying to be horrible or anything but how on earth did you get to 38 without getting work experience? I'm afraid that would be the first thing I'd ask if I was a potential employer. Perhaps you're not explaining this very well on your CV.

work for nothing in a charity shop for a while. maybe 6 months not 5 days a week of course to build up experience. i'm sure they don't all need 2 years.

Thats a very good idea, actually. Consider it.

Don't panic, Stoneybroke, it always seems like that. Good suggestions here.

Your age is neither here nor there. You want a job, you want to study and get qualifications, you're prepared to work hard. That's what matters.

Try your local supermarket first. Don't give them the whole spiel, just say you're looking for work, and hoping to take a college course so you'll be saving hard and looking for any overtime that's going.
