IF a new type of triathlon - quadrathlon? - was "invented" what would you like the other sport to be? Rowing? Archery? Weight lifting? What would in your opinion fit in with swimming, cycling and running?...just curious!

Banjobongo, I think you have too much time on your hands :D

Rowing would be great but the cost of a decent scull is more than a top end TT bike and its too heavy on the legs to mix with a cycle and run plus logistically impossible for a mass or wave start event. So, you would need something to test the upper body stamina and also has an element of skill, complements the other 3, is manageable, logistically possible and popular enough in its own right as a sport!

Hypothetically though, how much fun would it be to negotiate a climbing wall after the run :D

Always thought Kyaking/Canoing would be a good compliment to the other three

I thought I'd seen something about a couple of variations of quadrathons before, one of them added on a sea canoeing leg but I cannot remember what the other one had.

Biathlon of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting has to be the toughest though. The XC skiing is hard enough, but then having to stop, get the HR down and shoot five targets, then any targets that you miss means that you have to do an extra 400m(?) lap before heading back out onto the course proper and then doing it all again.

Make it five - fencing, horse jumping, shooting - lose the bike bit ;)

No there's an idea. Maybe call it the Modern Five-event-athlon. ;)

the only activity that should be carried out after a swim, run and cycle is lying down and sleeping for a long time

Rowing - need another one for the arms.

kayaking covers that and is easier to have multiple boats in the water at the same time as you're moving forwards rather than backwards. Also need very strong core for kayaking (assume this also true for rowing though)

Never actually paid attention to it when it was on TV, I always thought it was one of those made-for-Eurosport numbers like Truck Racing or ride your Red Bull motorcycle through hoops type things.

An extra 400m for every target missed? Talk about pressure. Bucket-loads of physical and mental stamina required obviously.

Gaelforce (http://www.gaelforcewest.ie/) encompasses three out of the four elements of the "triathlon + kayaking" model, the only difference being swimming is substituted for hiking. Has anyone here taken part in it before?

There are plenty of adventure races around which encompass running, swimming, cycling and many other sports (particularly kayaking). Generally swimming tends to be a very small component of these races, if they have it at all. I think the turas mor, which was held in Cork/Kerry this year had about 9 or 10 different events over its 5 day duration (Sea kayaking, orienteering, cycling, hiking/running, swimming, ocean rowing, zip wire, lake canoeing, archery, jumaring, abseiling, if I remember correctly).
