Jonny Caldwell and Michael Hoey are progressing nicely at Q School

    As is Michael McGeady.

Would be great to see some new faces on tour next year.

Crikey that must be a hard slog... 6 rounds in 6 days under incredible pressure. Last cut has been made now so the next 2 days...

The northern irish lads still going well - Caldwell, Hoey. The two full fatters are still in with a good shot too - Mcgeady and Thornton.

Scoring seems to be a little poorer today so could be a real day for hanging on in there.

Delighted to see Andy Coltart going strongly. Would love for him to get back on tour!!

It's very tense as the last round of Q school comes to a finish for some of the Irish lads.

Michael Hoey is going along like a train and is currently in 8th spot on course to make his first full tour card!

Michael McGeady and Jonathan Caldwell are just under cut line at T31 and need a couple of people to drop to make their cards.

Keep your fingers crossed that they can all get their cards by this afternoon.

    Sugar...he's gone back to -5.

That's his chance gone I'd say.

    Pity.

Who has? Jonny Caldwell.......he's on -6 now. Ok I guess you mean McGeady......yes -5 looks to be at least one shot too many. He had a bogey at the last and that may be tough to get over.

He played with McIllroy in the Walker Cup during the summer and I hope he scrapes through.

Michael Hoey has been around for a while but hasn't improved enough unfortunately. However he's looking good today........6th place now and 4 under for the back 9 so far.

Wish this was on the tv... my f5 button is about worn out. Great round from Hoey... Caldwell sitting 29th just now. Could do with playing the final 6 holes in 1 under or better to be safe though. Scottish lads going well too... just 6 holes to go for andy coltary... hopefully he doesnt blow it!

Well done Jonny....he just go in at 30th place. I assume that tied 30th is ok?

He may end up slightly better if Garcia-Heredia falls back. Nobody below him can catch or overtake him.

Drysdale and Millar need to be careful and not drop a handful of shots in the last couple of holes.

    Hoey finished about 7th.

Well done guys and good luck next year.

Fair play to the scottish boys Graeme!

I think the performance of the last couple of days must have come from Chris Doak. He started off with three so so rounds 75,72,71 and then plucked an amazing 62 out of his bag followed by 71 yesterday and a solid 70 today to earn his card. I'd say he's well chuffed?

    .

I don't think ties get in.

There is a playoff if memory serves me well.

Looks like all he has to do now is par his way in from 16.:D

Of course there IS a downside to Andy Coltart getting his card back...he won't be sharing a studio with Sarah Stirk next year..awwwww!:(

I hope you are wrong Slumped.........

"At the conclusion of 108 holes, the leading 30 players (+ ties) will be ranked according to score.
Players holding these positions will be eligible for membership in Category 11(b) of the European Tour (and
Category 4(a) of the Challenge Tour) for the 2009 season and will be subject to the 2009 re-rank policy adopted
    by the Tournament Committee".

"Players making the cut and finishing beyond 30th place will be eligible for membership in Category 14 of the
European Tour and of the Challenge Tour (Category 7) for the 2009 season."

The second paragraph applies to McGeady as he just missed out but made the cut.

He moved up to tied 29th as Garcia-Heredia bogied the last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭Mister Sifter

Doesn't apply to Caldwell now anyway, he's up to 29th!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

I'm still a bit worried at the following statement.....

"All tied scores shall be ranked by card play off as follows:
    (a) the best last 18 holes," etc.

That would put Caldwell down to 31st if they pick the top 30 players.

    No - he is tied 29th -

AFAIK there is a playoff to determine the top 30 positions.

With 4 people on T29, two will get cards and two will be on a reserve list

Maybe they changed it in recent years...but we'll see...

The rules are on the application form here.....

    http://dps.twiihosting.net/pga/doc/content/doc_528_590.pdf

It doesn't mention playoffs but it does indicate that the top 30 and ties will qualify but then later on it says that positions will be ranked according to about 6 criteria.....the first of which would push Caldwell down to 31st. I hope he gets through on the tied rule though.

Nope, the top 30 and ties secure their cards. See other posts above.

For anyone who may not remember Ms Stirk...here's a reminder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭Mister Sifter

Look out Padraig, Andy's back! Coltart bogied 16 but finished on 10 under to get in easy. Made up for him!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

I've read the rules again and I'm now thinking that ties are ranked......that would mean Caldwell would miss out by one.

I hope that I'm wrong though.

Hmmm... it's confusing. What i took it to mean is that top 30 and ties get cards. the ranking then applies to who would get preference for events next season. If you ever look at the entry lists for tournaments, unless you are exempt, then who goes to an order system.

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

I don't think he will miss out, just he may be ranked 29th, 30th, 31st or 32nd depending on the criteria used. This ranking may affect his entry into tournaments later in the season depending on where the cut-off falls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

Ok I think that's probably correct Licksy. He is ranked 31st I think. He gets his card which is the main thing but may miss out on some of the tournaments due to the entry list etc. But the main thing is that he qualified and it's unfortunately a big gulf between qualifying and missing out (hard luck to the guys on -5).

I hope Hoey can kick on a bit. I haven't seen him for a while but he started off quite well when he first turned pro. He's a good iron player but from memory isn't the longest off the tee......but I'm probably wrong.

All Tour Players hate the Tour School with a vengence. It's soooo tough out there and there'e so much talent about.

Good to see Drysdale getting in this year also as he has had his fair share of heartache.

Gary Houston just outside.....he will be bitterly disappointed after losing his card. Regular practice partner and friend of Gary Murphy. Lima out as well..

You're only as good as the next event. Keeps them on their toes I suppose but it cab be ruthless.

I'm keeping the day job (as best I can in the current climate)! Don't fancy trying my hand at the Tour!

    From European Tour site:

"Colombo was one of eight players to emerge successfully through all three rounds. As well as Colombo and Henningsson, Northern Ireland starlet Jonathan Caldwell, Tartan Tour Number One Chris Doak, Scottish amateur sensation Callum Macaulay, Sweden’s Ake Nilsson, and rising stars Danny Willet and Chris Wood all managed to successfully negotiate all three stages, which started back in September."

    Looks good for Caldwell!

    Also - BBC report

"Michael Hoey and Jonathan Caldwell have both claimed European Tour cards for next year after qualifying from the six-round Tour School in Spain.

But Michael McGeady has missed out by one shot after bogeying the last. "

They are definately all in the race to dubai with full playing privileges for 2009 meaning they can enter all tournaments during the year except for those with specific entry Criteria, (IE Mercedes benz championship in august, HSBC Champions, Majors etc.). As has been mentioned before they are ranked based on their final positions as of today. To be honest there wont be too many tournaments that they wont get into once they have the full card. There may be occassions where they wont get into a tournament as the cut off point will come higher up the list than they are however these tournaments will be few and far between.

Well done lads. Lets hope this is the start of another great year for the Irish on tour although it'll take some doing to top this year!:D

PS. Commiserations to Michael McGeady. So close and that bogey on 18 was dissappointing however he will have restricted playing privilages for the year and also a good ranking on the Challenge tour so Hopefully he will come good. Performed well for 4 of the 6 rounds so he is obviously nearly there in terms of having the game for tour.
