Freeview and recording?

If a TV has built in freeview and I have a hard disk recorder then can I record the freeview even though the freeview signal is via the TV and not going through the hd recorder?

So cable to recorder then out to TV, but freeview is resident on TV.

    Hope this makes sense

You got to give a bit more to get help. :)

you have to be sending a/v signal to your recorder so that recorder can capture/record it. What ports do you have on your TV and Recorder?
Anything about external signal recording in your recorder manual? What make is your recorder?
