HR during triathlons

I've just got a HR monitor and now realising that I probably push too hard in training pace-wise. All my training is usually done above 166 and I would often push into the 180's.

I'm 34 y.o. so this might not be the best approach. I'm guessing my Max HR is probably around 190 (maybe slightly more).

Anyone monitor their heart rate during triathlons?
If so, how is you heart rate for sprint distance? or olympic distance?
Du you deliberately keep you HR down for olympic distance and longer?

    Hi Bagus,

I haven't done a triathlon yet so I cannot offer any advice. I just think its bad form that someone hasn't answered any of your questions yet so I'm posting this to attract attention to the thread so that they do!

Books have been written on HR's and triathlon so this is a very basic account
1.don't guess your max, measure it.
    2. yes, it seems like you're pushing too hard in some training sessions. A key rule of thumb "hard sessions should be hard, easy sessions easy, everything in the middle is junk"
    3. For long triathlons I do try to keep an eye on my HR. Only when I expect to be out over 3 hours though.

Interestingly I have Mike Finch's Book and he recomends NOT to measure HR during the actual Triathlons only to use them when training.

For what it's worth (and no basis for it !) but most of my training is done in the 120-140 range (my Max being 190) and it very rare I would go over 165 although I'm sure the better informed will tell me that I probably should be going anaerobic a % of the time.
