Is it a good time for Sports Cars like Porsche Boxster or Mazda RX-8?

    Hi

    (I run a small car business start-up)

I was just thinking today if it was a good or bad time to dabble in sports cars? While I know its a bad time to be selling any car, or anything for that matter, the flip side of the down-turn is that sports cars have become cheaper on the trade side and cheaper for customers too. So you really could own a Porsche for not a massive amount of money.

I have access today to a Porsche Boxster 2000 55K miles and a 2004 Mazda RX-8 35k miles. I was thinking about taking the plunge - but wanted to get some feedback first.

If I were to price the Porsche for around €19000 would it sell?
If I were to price the Mazda for around €15000 would it sell?

did the whole price research and took a look at carzone - but wanted to get a more realistic picture, is it time for sports or not?

It's ALWAYS time for sports, but do realise that, for most people, they are 2nd cars, so budget is smaller. And, quite often, they are bought - and sold - on the advice of 'management' (ahem)....;) If she doesn't like it/want it..........they usually have to go.

Those dedicated drivers of them though :) use them all the time, and imho, they are better value than an 'ordinary car' (which I have as well, btw...)

That Boxster sounds cheap - the Mazda is a better car probably. Mind you, the RX only does about ....17mpg??

Be prepared to have them on the forecourt for a long time, though -they won't sell as quick as a Polo/Focus, that's for sure........

As a business, don't get sucked into buying what you like but rather only buy what will sell. Hard for petrol heads to tell the difference, sometimes !! :)

Personally, I wouldn't. This is a time for bread-and-butter cars, for economical cars. The cars you're naming are leisure cars or second/third cars.

I haven't sold a TT in months, but A3s and A4 are still ticking along nicely.

I had one guy cancel an A5 because the company he runs may have to lay off people soon and it wouldn't look right for him to be swanning around in a new car while he's giving bad news to people.

One girl in work - her boyfriend was selling an RX8 a few months ago, it took him AGES to sell it, despite being a nice colour and a decent price.

I'd say you'll pick up some sportscar bargains at the moment, I'm not sure how quickly you'd sell them though.

Through a few of the car forums i'm on i wouldn't say it is a good time. Its not really a good time for any cars though is it?

A mate of mine was telling me the RX8's are being murdered on tax and VRT (if importing) now because of the twin rotor engine business, they are down as a 2.8 rather than a 1.4 or something (correct me if I'm wrong:o)

Presume this doesn't apply to older non-import versions though, so you should be ok.

Another friend of mine has a Boxster he bought brand new in 06 (I know, feckin lunatic is gonna lose his life on it), and he is afraid to ask what it's worth now, no matter when he sells it he's gonna take a hit but he reckons not a chance of offloading it at the moment.

As for the RX8 with it's fuel consumption levels, I personally wouldn't want it, would you?

If I was him, I'd just keep driving the Boxster - there's nothing wrong with the car, so he's best to keep his money in his pocket and hang on to it. No matter what he changed it for, he'd lose his shirt.

As for RX8 fuel, I'm sure it's a total pain, but if the only issue is fuel, and all the others tick the boxes, it's not the worst option - and it does have 4 seats.......always easier to sell than 2 seats.

So, saw an ad around town yesterday for this: I don't know if any of these qualify as 'bargains'...... Coupe Liquidation

I sold my Boxster a few weeks back
it was up for sale for a while but if you get a good one (full history etc)
    it will move on ok
my advice is to drive TTs or RXs but there is nothing like a Porsche
    quality perfection and performace
you can pickup a 97-98 Boxster for around 18k
get one with a full history or you will never sell it again
i cant see them going much lower tbh
