Claiming tax back as Third-level student?

    Hi,

    Just a quick question i'm hoping somebody can answer.

    I worked for a year and a half and now i'm studying full-time. I heard that i can claim the tax that i paid back? Is this true?

    Kinda. If you didn't exhaust your full annual tax credit (ie you gave up work half way through a year) then you can apply for a review of tax paid. If you inform them you're a student and not planning to work again before the end of the tax year they may do this for you now rather than insisting you wait until the tax year is over.

    Similarly you are also entitled to tax relief on college fees paid, but again it's in the form of a tax credit so you would have to have a tax liability to take advantage of it.

    Students do not have any special tax entitlements (even though lots of people seem to think they do). I doubt you will be able to claim anything from your full years work unless you happened to be on emergency tax. The half year though you more than likely will be able to claim some back on as if you wont have used up all your tax credits for the whole year.

    Also if you paid full tuition fees for your course and have worked + paid tax this year, you can claim about 20% of the fees back through tax.

    Thanks guys for the replys. I didn't know about maybe being able to claim since i haven't exhausted all tax credits so that was helpful. I'll contact revenue next week - though here's hoping i don't owe money :eek:
