    50000km or 50000miles?
50000km is about 2 services a year and if its 50000miles its about 3 services.

A minor service costs 175 and a major is 295. About 700 on maintance I suppose.

Budget a couple hunderd for a new starte rmotor to, or just replace the carbon clutch with a solid one as soon as you get it. Or else the starter will clog with carbon dust from the fly.:)

There the worst, '00 on, we sell roughly 30 starters a month and can't even keep enough in stock. We have even started selling the solid flywheel to, we sell around 10 a month of them. It is the starter that is side mounted on the transit.

The front wheel drive model? Do you work in the ford dealer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,536 ✭✭✭Dolph Starbeam

Its the same starter on all of the i think. We mainly deal in starters and alternator, recons and new. They are by far our biggest seller.

I work in a main dealer, and I've never seen one go. The dual mass flywheel in that transit isn't too bad compared to others, we would replace them an odd time with a clutch but rearly have to replace them becasue they break.

Ye thats strange. We get a lot of people in for them. I don't know why that is.

So it's servicing every 25k or so?

How often will tyres be needed?
    What sort of fuel comsumption?

There's so many variations in the Transit that it's impossible to guess fuel economy without knowing which model you're after (and I'm sure there's some inflated specs on the Ford website).

I've a RWD LWB High Roof Transit T280 90ps (say that 10 times real fast), it won't take off from a junction but it feels like it'd pull a small country. Someone said to me ages ago that Ford are notoriously bad cold starters, my old mondeo proved that so I would believe the starter motor thing about transits. Not really a huge expense though, in the grand scheme of things?

Thats easy ... if it was a common part to go the last place i'd be buying it is from a dealer.

We'd budget €183 per month ex. VAT for a Transit 350 over 3yrs / 150,000 km. Covers Servicing, Maintenance, Tax, Tyres, Breakdown assistance and replacement car. We'd usually budget maintenance costs to cover ourselves, but we wouldn't be too far over on that.

Ye thats it i'd say it is, i know our local Ford dealer wouldn't sell any as our price would be more than half theres, and i know the flywheel is half there price to.

if you carrying goods with any weight at all, stay well clear of the 90hp versions.
There's alot of them on Irish market in from UK and they look and run great for the first 4 months, then you may aswell set fire to the ba$tard and claim insurance!!

Next thing is budget approx 1300 (private garage) or 2200 (ford dealer) for a new diesel pump.
Ive replaced 3 of the f**king things in vans ive owned with the usual sh1te from ford "oh its not our problem" . And just to pi$s them off, refuse point blank to give them back the broken pump - gets their knickers in a right twist:D:D:D

Same here, said this before on this site and got stange looks.

Heard of them giving trouble on Mondeos as well.

Other problems Transits have is bottom arm bushes, the ones on the rear of the front arms collapse.

With heavy loads, front wheel bearings give trouble and can be a pain in the stones to change.

If you are buying an older one the bonnet that opens with a key can act the maggot and be a right pisser if it acts up when you need a jump start:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,536 ✭✭✭Dolph Starbeam

Ye we'd have more trouble with the alternators for Mondeos. With the transits we stock a massive range of transit service parts, discs, pads carrier bearings, front wheel bearing are a big seller to, maybe 20 a month we'd sell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,248 ✭✭✭Plug

I do a few of them front wheel bearings, although there is a special tool required.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,323 ✭✭✭Savman

This is all good insight into maintaining a Transit, keep 'em coming (but er, not too many hopefully :o)

The special tool can be replaced with BF&I*

I see no one has said anything about milage yet so here goes....
    I have a 05' T260 100ps and it gets about 28-32mpg never any more....
The boss had a 05' T280 115ps and it did some couple miles less but not much. He has a 08' T280 115ps which has the tdci engine and in does 30-34mpg I think Well some bit more than his last one anyway

I get about 400/460 miles on a full tank (80 litres approx). For service, check this guy out and the link to the part supplier in it too: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=57005518

You a tad heavy on the right foot?

Not really. I'd 120 on a motorway and everything though (time is money and all that :pac:)

Its a good job you didnt go for the twin wheeled model....

Speed limiters will be in on all commercial vehicles over a DGVW of 3500 from 1st of Jan

But surely a twin rear wheel Transit 350 still has a DGVW of 3500kg and won;t need a limiter?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭Slidey

Some of the Twin Wheels could be 3500, but most twin wheeled vans are over that.

Having twin wheels is a good indicator of them being a 'heavy' goods vehicle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

The only transits you'll find with twin rear wheels is the Jumbo 350. It's over 3.5t, there is a single wheel Jumbo that's under 3.5t though.

There is also a single wheel Transit with a DGVW of 3800(or possibly 3900)

Found it on a bus i was testing

Cool, I'm not too knowledgeable on busses. In fact, take everything I say with a pinch of salt just incase :P
