Well I'm on a researching mission for the new year for my sis in law. She's looking for a good 7 seater. Has about 15k to spend and it must be diesel. Anything ideas would be helpful once its not a french people carrier.

bb, my missus has a Verso diesel and loves it.

We could be selling it in the new year or even sooner but for a bit more than your 15k. Its a 05 Sol version, so it was the top spec. Very few of them around. As far as I know it has about 45,000km on it. PM me

Under no circumstances buy any Mazda with a common rail turbo D engine.

Believe me when I tell you, you will regret it. I have a very large 13k garden ornament of one at home, as proof.

More here; Read all about it

I was going to suggest the C4 Grande Picasso, one of the best 7 seaters, you could land a UK low mileage 2007 1.6HDI for near that money, but I see you don't want to go French.

If its a full time 7 seater then the Verso is no good for you, but as an occasional one it would work.

    VW Touran is another option

FWIW a friend of mine (taxi driver) got a Ford Galaxy from new and had nothing but trouble with it, broke his heart in the end cos he essentially got a €35k lemon

Was it the current or previous galaxy? I know the previous model was a disaster, but thought the current model was meant to be a lot better.

2 neighbours have 2nd hand (possibly 03) Hyundai Trajets for 2 years now and they seem to be running fine. The only problem with this is the same as the Avensis Verso mentioned by Lex - 2 rear seats dont fold flat and have to be lifted in and out to use the full boot space. 2 people in work have had various problems with 99 & -00 diesel Zafiras.

TBH, ruling out French people carriers probably rules out the best of them. From what's left, though, she could look at Volvo V70/Mercedes E-class est./Audi A6 estate, all were available with a 7 seater option.

I've got an 08 Galaxy Ghia and have not had one problem with it, great handling, great car all over. Its a full/adult size 7 seater plus all rear seats fold flat so you can do some serious shopping up north. We had enough room in the back for a Ikea single bed, chest of drawers, baby cot and a load of groceries. I'd recommend this car to anyone.

I bought a new one in 07. Died at 918kms (yep, nine-hundred & eighteen). Sold at 4 mths. QED, for me.

I laughted at Trajets etc, then. Between my 02 Mazda MPV and the Galaxy, I'm not laughing at them now...........:o

Op, some one is going to have a problem with everything. Just go out, look, at see what you like. (Obviously take advice on major known common problems). But after that, it's the luck of the draw.

That's not the 2.7, it's actually the 2.5 td5. The seats as in the pic folder into the side walls, but there isn't major space in the back. Unless they are small kids. Acess to the seats is through the boot. If your buying diesel to save on petrol etc. etc. i don't think would fit into the criteria.

The Corolla Verso seems to be the one that ticks the boxes. The reason the French 7 seaters are a no no is the resale value. A X year old Toyota would shift much easier than its french equivilant on the open market and its seems to be easier to maintain

While I generally hate Opels I think the Zafira might do the job for the OP:

The one thing the Zaffy has over the Verso is boot space....everywhere else the Verso is better

You do know that the Verso's diesel is a 2.2, right?

If you thought about it logically if something is more desirable then it is going to cost you more to buy it in the first place. So you're not really going to save money if you're buying used. Low depreciation only really counts when buying new, or up to maybe 3 years old.

The Zafira is a lovely MPV, and comes with smaller diesel engines(1.9 though taxed as a 2.0), and that FIAT diesel in it has a very impressive reputation for reliability too.

@ OP - why not French?

I bought an imported 95 toyota Estima in 2000 nearly 9 years later and at almost 14 years of age she is still going strong, 2.2 turbo diesel engine which is bulletproof. And before all the "ooooh import it will cost ya merchants start" I have never had problems sourcing parts for it and they have cost me no more than the normal ones. I liked it so much I bought another one last week a 2002 and gave it to my missus. I am driving the old one and it has just passed its NCT for another 2 years.

2.2 diesel was only introduced in the Verso in late 2005 with a 6sp gearbox. Prior to that it was the 2.0 5sp
