Starting target shooting??

Relatively new to boards but intersted to see a section on shooting.

Always had a bit of an interest in firearms and shooting, was in the PDF years ago and am interested in getting into target pistol/rifle shooting.
After looking around on boards I am suprised to see shops that apparently sell pistols .22 or otherwise and rifles that are not .22 rimfire as that was pretty much all I was aware existed.

Anyway I'm interested in getting into target shooting, pistol and rifle.
I live in Dublin so I don't know anyone that owns land to shoot on, but it's target shooting I'm interested in.

    Q1.
Is there a site with a list of clubs in and around the Dublin area?
Is there a specific criteria/ can anyone (almost anyone join or is it a difficult sport to get into?) I heard it's cliquey?
    Q2.
Are the rifles and pistols I saw on sale in Irish shop website allowed for sale in the Republic? (to license holders) as in large bore rifles and 9mm pistols as I didn't realise they were legally allowed?

    Cheers.

    Thanks for the reply,
I already saw that but didn't think it answered some of the questions I had in mind.
I opened the wiki to BRc but it doesn't have a contact or what disciplines it caters to? only the location opens up, thats kinda handy to me

BRC has silhouettes to (I think) 100m or so shot from under a cover. There's a 50m range (it might go to 100 too, can't remember) that is shot from indoors (out a hatch) in the prone position. Smallbore rifle and pistol are what's mostly used as far as I know.

The range facilities are excellent. Clean, well-maintained, decent kitchen for tea and coffee, good toilets, that kind of stuff.

Unfortunately I have no contact details for anyone in BRC, sorry.

    Thanks for that,
I'll just have to get stuck in and trawl through the info, I'd like to join one club that covers different types of sport shooting instead of joining different ones.
I'm interested in rifles and pistols for target shooting , I'd like to think there are functional classic/antique rifled firearms including pistols to shoot, but imagine this is unlikely in Ireland. Also I'm uncertain what the budget for that would be.

I find the information is kinda patchy and have half heartedly started trawling through it, I'll start this weekend but I have a few other jobs that are demanding attention.

If you're in the Dublin area then have a look at Hilltop (if you're in south Dublin) and Courtlough (if you're in north Dublin) since they are reasonably large commercial ranges with lots of disciplines on offer (both shotgun and rifle at both). Even if you don't end up joining either they're worth a look to get a feel for what's available.

There's a Vintage & Classic Rifle Association. They're having a shoot tomorrow in the Midlands Range with WWI/WWII-era rifles. Sikamick here should be able to fill you in on the details.

Yep, it is. If you find out any information in your trawl that's missing from the wiki then please add it. If you don't want to do that, you can always PM me the "raw" info and I'll tidy it up and stick it in the wiki for you.

BRC do silhouettes to 100 metres, prone sporting and target rifle at 50m and 100 yards, smallbore and fullbore pistol.

If you're interested in fully functioning antique firearms, why not come to the Vintage Classic Rifle Association shoot tomorrow in Midlands? It's a good day out and should fulfill your desires.

Hey all thanks for the info Girlfriends off to the rds tomorrow so think I'll make the journey down, any ideas what time its on from?
sikamick an organiser/connected with the vintage association?

    I'm more South Dublin,
At the moment shotguns aren't an interest, rifled classic/modern are. I would like to approach/join a club so can get some opinions off them before spending any money, I'll look into the Hilltop place, no point in getting the wrong tools, plus to get advice on the official and legal requirements.
thanks all for the info, I may pry for more.

Try make it down for about ten, I think that's when it's all kicking off. It's a good day out, so you'll get to enjoy yourself, enjoy good company and try out some real veterans.

Not to my knowledge, but I'm sure if you pop down you'll find people receptive enough.
