    Hey all.

I just got my first DSLR today, the Canon 450D. There are a few questions I'd like to ask, so any help is much appreciated.

How does this lens look? I'm looking for a lens that does macro and is a decent telephoto. I'm not prepared to spend much as I'm only back from a holiday, I just bought a DSLR and Christmas is nearly here.
My main photography areas would be macro, landscape and night scenes.

My father has a Canon SLR camera. Would his lenses work seamlessly with my DSLR?

With the Canon's 1.6x crop does that mean if I buy a 70-300mm lense, will it then have the focal range of up to around 470mm?

You are going to see a lot of me now considering I made my first plunge in to medium seriousness photography.
Oh by the way here is my first night shot on a DSLR. It has the Kilkenny background in it. Nowlan Park to the left, St. Canice's Cathedral in the center and O'Loughlin Gaels GAA Club to the right and in the foreground. Also, it's taken from a side window in my house :o

Thank you for your patience and experience. :)

Congrats on the purchase, I'm sure you will get great sport out of it.

IIRC the sigma lens most often reccomended here is the APO version. Still good value and maybe can be bought cheaper from some ebay sellers.

If your dad's canon is an eos model the lenses should work fine.

Bang on on the effect of the FL multiplier.

Was down your way today, just back in the door, we'll have to do a boards meetup down there soon.

I bought the APO version about a month ago from adverts.ie and am really happy with it so far. However, if you want to take landscape and night time shots, id say its not the best lens to get as 70mm is too narrow and it doesnt do its best work in the dark. The macro is good enough on it too.

This lens is more for sports and wildlife photography id say. Id go for a faster and wider lens for the landscape and night time shooting, IMO.

    Thanks guys.

What do APO lenses bring that ordinary lenses don't?

So would this be a better lens than my original choice?

Could someone please advise me on which lens to get?

    Option 1
    Sigma
    70-300mm
    f4-5.6
    APO
    €175

    Option 2
    Sigma
    28-300mm
    f3.5-6.3
    DG
    €208

Any others you'd recommend for in or around same price?

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. :)

If you're looking for a long range lens I can't reccomend the Canon 70-200 set enough. You can get the F/4 Non-IS for about €420.It won't have the reach of the Sigmas but the results will be much sharper and you will have f/4 at 200mm compared to f/5.6 and f/6.3 which will make a huge difference in low light. If you're on a budget the Sigmas will definitely do the job but if you're looking for a long term lens I'd go with the Canon 70-200.

Of these two I would go for the first, for a couple of reasons,

1: Generally speaking the greater the zoom range the bigger the bigger the compromises to produce it especially at a budget price.

2: F6.3 on the 28-300 is a little on the dark side.
