Most lakes have ducks, it's just a matter of finding the hot spots. Get a forshore licence and the shooting is free. The quality of the shooting will depend on where you are in the country. Lots of ducks around the Shannon and in the midland lakes.

May i ask what a forshore licence is ?

It's basically a permit allowing you shoot the shore of state lakes. It's not a permission to cross people's land to get to the lake, just a permit to shoot the shore (and use a boat to shott the lake itself).

They are available free and last for 5 years.

    Thank you.
Where can you actually get the permit ?
I guess the Corrib (Galway & Mayo) is one of the lakes you would be entitled to go to.

    Thanks Marlin vs,
are you aware of any maps available listing all state lakes ?
I do not want to go where i am not supposed to and locals are more than reluctant to tell where the good spots are which i a way i understand.
    I leave north of Galway.

got it from the Nationalpark's and wildlife services's website.
One state lake in Galway but a big one !
The lakes are state owned but tha land arround it is most likely not so as Pullhandbang said "It's not a permission to cross people's land to get to the lake, just a permit to shoot the shore". Unless you are member of a gunclub that has rights to that land or know a farmer , how do you actually get access to the shore except using the main roads / ways ?

well 1 way is to buy or rent a boat, most state owned lakes have access to the public to launch a boat

Best thing to do if you're not a local, is take a drive around the roads and lanes that lead to the lake shore. Do it in daylight and stop and talk to any farmers you meet. Ask them if they have land by the lake and if it was ok for you to cross it to shoot a few ducks. They'll probably tell you where the best spots are.
