    Hey folks ...

Question about INFERNAL AFFAIRS , this is what the DEPARTED was based on yes ?

Because someone I know swears it's INFERNAL AFFAIRS II that is what DEPARTED is remade from ?

Yeah Infernal Affairs is the one its based on - storyline is similiar and some scenes are more or less identical. Ending is a different though -
the pretty dire Infernal Affairs III couldn't exist if the first ended like the Departed - both policemen die in the Departed whereas only the 'good' cop is killed in the original

Yeah I have the three of them and The Departed. If you look in the closing credits in The Departed you see a little note saying 'based on the movie Infernal Affairs by Andrew Lau'.

As a fan that pissed me off, it was a almost straight copy yet that little sentence is all the respect Andrew Lau got. It should have been at the start like Stephen King movies.

To be fair it was pretty widely reported before The Departed even came out that the movie was based on Infernal Affairs. Nobody tried to deny it.

[Controversial Opinion] The Departed is better than Infernal Affairs (except for the ending) [/Controversial Opinion]

Uuuuuuuuu. Them's fightin' words. I didn't really care much for The Departed. Maybe 'cos I really loved IA. Just didn't like Mark Whalberg's character and couldn't see why they split CI Wong character into two (Hope that's not a spoiler.)
IA 1: Brilliant. One of my favourite films. Sure it's got all the modern Asian cinema cliches: Flashback to 5 mins ago.
    Badguy seeking redemption. Love triangle
but it used them well. And what a f*cking cast: Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Anthony Wong, the brilliant Eric Tsang.

IA2: Not as good as first but liked
the fact that it focused on the connection between Sam and Wong

    IA3: Loved it.
Can't see how they're going to make this if they still intend on going through with the other remakes.
. Has my favourite scene of all the films
The split screen flashback where Lau and Leung come clean to the shrink. Brilliantly done

You know, The Departed is one of the only Asian remakes I like. Maybe it's just that I've a love of Scorcese's films, but I couldn't honestly say which film I prefer, The Departed or Infernal affairs, and I've watched both many times.

Yeah I honestly fail to see how people could dismiss the Departed as just another remake. It has its own unique style (the opening montage with the Dropkick Murphys is simply masterful), successfully changes the setting from Hong Kong to America, and builds upon many of the themes and characters established in the original while remaining true to the basic storyline. They are both fantastic, and you can really appreciate the strengths of beach of them on their own terms.

I thought Infernal Affairs was far superior to the Departed in almost every respect.
Tighter running time, higher tension, cleverer script, and alot more subtle than the dumbed down heavy footed Departed.

dno if its cos i watched it goin to bed, but i found IA hard to watch
    still amazing though

but I never knew the departed was based on that, until everything got too familiar, but they put their own twist on the ending

I thought The Departed was pretty good. I just think that the original was superior. Probably because I knew pretty much how it was going to twist and turn. Maybe if I saw The Departed first I might think that it was superior. It was good to see Jack Nicholson act again as opposed to just playing "Jaaaack"

Thought he made a complete ham of the role. He was like a cartoon character, all over the top acting and larger than life characterisation. Seemed he was trying too hard to make him crazy but it just came across as silly. Much preferred the way the character was played in IA, much more believable.

I did really like the departed but felt they really sold out with the ending. It was just too well wrapped up. IA's ending was much better, it was different and unexpected.

boss,go watch the original movie.IMO ,i mean IMHO,the original is wayyyyyy better than that.*ah damn i read your 1st line then straight to reply.then i mean try it with with no need subtitle and decent culture knowledge*

[meanwhile, just realise that Internal Affair is the english translation of the original movie - another bad practice of the translator:( read up the word in dictionary ,it is wayyyyyyy cooler of what it means originally]

after all these years of sh*tty hong kong movies ,Internal affair is actually one of the long waiting good hongkong-made movie ,at that time.i saw the 2nd one i was disgusted to hell - business ruin the movie again.never dare to watch to 3rd one as i really dont want it becomes worse for my eyes - heard the 3rd is good tho.1st class story + all stars cast = probably the brighest page in the history of hongkong-made movies.ironically the totally sh*ted Departed got the Oscar - not even close 1% good as the original.internal affair has the better themes music as i can remember....well money spent in this respect ,not usual among hongkongmovie *music up when Sir Wong(what's his name in english again?lol) drop on the top of the car, gosh,my tears*

the recent one i saw was the New police story ,by Jackie Chan, back in 2005 i think lol.thank god i love him when he is not a clown in hollywood movie

good lad:Dexactly what i mean why is it not even close 1% of the original one.everything is so obvious and expected.it's not because of the remake, its the way of directed/illustrated.

the cunning and brain twisting is what makes the movie so good - it's unique compare to straightforward western culture.
