How to make.......

Hope this is in the right section!

I am looking to make my own basic wooden plaques, shapes, letters etc !! i would need them to have a good smooth finish on them for painting. What would be the best ( and cheapest ) was to do this, i was looking into CNC routers but way out of my price range!

Any suggestions, i am very new to this as you probably would have guessed

Id try either a jig saw or if you can spend a bit more then a band saw.

wooden plaques? like cork1 said, I'd use a jigsaw/bandsaw and a roundover bit in a router to clean them up.

Letters; something along these lines perhaps?

I would advise practicing on scrap wood first and make sure you get some and eye and ear protection.
