Sony KDL32V4000 and its digital tuner??

    Hi all,

I bought a Sony KDL32V4000 as second TV to use with sky and DVD player. There was no mention anywhere of it being able to receive MPEG4 signals, but after a digital scan, I find 4+4 channels from Three Rock + 7day EPG. The only issue is on the TV channels, I am getting a "no video" message, sound is no problem, same as radios.

    My question is:
If the TV was MPEG2 only, would I still get the 4+4 channels during the scan?

If so, fair enough, I didn't buy the TV for DTT purpose and at €450, I would not say a word.

If not, am I doing something wrong? Should I be able to get the video on the 4 TV channels?

    Thanks for your Help,

If it were MPEG2 only, Yes you would pick up the channels with sound and no picture as MPEG is just the encoding. The signal is bradcast as DVB-T standard.

The V4000 range dont have an MPEG4 decoding tuner as far as I know. it is the W4000/W4500 range that have MPEG4.

Where did you pick one up for €450?

You could try a MPEG-4 cam, a few people have had success using cams.

This thread may be of interest.

The Sony range of MPEG4 televisions have a common manual, which can be downloaded here (see page 33 for specs).
The cover page of the manual lists the following Sony TV's which include the following spec "H.264/MPEG-4 AVC HP@L4.0 for HD, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC HP@L3.0 for SD and MPEG-2 MP@ML also for SD".
    KDL-52W40xx, KDL-52W42xx,
    KDL-46W40xx, KDL-46W42xx,
    KDL-40W40xx, KDL-40W42xx
    KDL-32W40xx, KDL-32W42xx
    KDL-40E40xx, KDL-32E40xx, KDL-26E40xx
    KDL-37V45xx, KDL-37V47xx
    KDL-32V45xx, KDL-32V47xx
    KDL-26V45xx, KDL-26V45xx

The Sony UK and Ireland sites do not mention the MPEG4 spec as there is no operational MPEG4 broadcasts other than tests. The Sony European sites (Norway, France etc) do include it in the spec as there is MPEG4 DTT broadcasting in those countries.

PowerCity are offering the 46W4500 on their web site and specifically mention that its MPEG4 DTT tuner will be suitable for Irish DTT.

Is the set any good? The specs look alright.

I got it in Richer Sounds Belfast, good tv for the price, it would have been a surprise bonus to get DTT, but as I said earlier, I have Sky in that room so will wait. I am using a Clarke Tech combo in the other room, works well except satellite 7 day EPG of course.

Thanks for your answers, and Slegs, thanks for the light.

Well spotted NewDubliner "All new BRAVIA W4500 Series takes the fast lane", but still no mention in the tech specs on the Sony Ireland that the 46W4500 is MPEG4 / Irish DTT compliant.

So are Powercity incorrect when they state (twice) in their basic spec for this TV "MPEG 4 TUNER FOR IRISH DTT"?
It would appear not, the manual for this new range of Sony TV's includes the following spec - Digital: MPEG-2 MP@ML/HL, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC HP@L4.0, MP@L3.0 (page 49).
This spec meets the the Minimum Receiver Requirements for DTT in Ireland v1.0 and Comreg's Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T) Network Technical Conditions attached to a Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Licence.

So to answer your question the set and the specs look good. Good luck with your purchase if you decide to buy.
A little expensive for me even with a free Blu-ray player .

BTW: Are Powercity the first Irish retailer to advertise a product for MPEG4 Irish DTT?
