Losing Word documents with power saver

Hello all, this is my first post here, I hope someone may be able to help me with a problem.

I am not very computer literate but I'll try to explain my problem. I have a Sony VAIO laptop running Windows Vista. I bought it in Japan and therefore it is entirely in Japanese. (I have hardly any Japanese!)

Recently I was working on a word document. If I leave the computer running it powers down automatically. I just need to hit any key and it powers back up and I can carry on writing. Great. The problem is that while this works 95% of the time, yesterday I did this and had a problem saving my document. What problem I don't know because the error message was in Japanese!

Today I turned on my computer to access this document. The file itself appears to have disappeared. When I search for it, I find a shortcut only with that title. The entire document appears to have vanished.

I really want to get this document back and I have no idea where to begin. Any suggestions? Thanks very much,
    Wrath of Piglet
