Hi all, I would really appreciate any help you guys could give me with this as I have college assignments due on Saturday and can't get my laptop to start.

When I turn on the computer I keep getting a box popping up saying

SAS window: winlogon.exe - Application Error

    The exception Single Step
A single step or trace operation has just been completed.
(0x80000004) occurred in the application at location 0x00000000.

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

However, whether I hit ok or cancel the computer flashes blue for a second and then goes back to restarting and the same box pops up again. I've tried starting the computer in safe mode but the same thing happens. Have I lost everything? I'd really appreciate any help at all! Thanks.

Are you able to log in in Safe Mode?

Thanks for the quick response Aidan. No I can't login in safe mode, the same message pops up and regardless of whether I click OK or Cancel the computer just restarts and the same thing happens again.

    Try this

Boot from the Windows XP installation CD.

At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press R to start Recovery Console. Choose the installation to be repaired by number (usually 1) and press "Enter".

When you are asked for the Administrator password, leave it blank and press "Enter".

At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r and press "Enter". (Note the space before /r) The disk check operation will start.

This will be a very thorough check of the hard drive and the file system...be patient and let it complete. It may appear to hang or even back up a few times...this is normal. 60 to 90 minutes is not unusual for this check...it may take longer in some cases.

Once the check completes and you are back at the command prompt, type exit and press "Enter". Let your computer boot normally to Windows.
