Anybody body see the documentary on The Thriller in Manila between Ali and Frasier on More 4 last night, brilliant stuff always thought Frasier never got the respect he was due as a fighter, because he didn’t go around shooting his mouth off like ali. Ali didn’t come across very well no sportsmanship and pretty out right racists. Not a boxer myself interesting to see what people in the know think

It certainly gave me a incite into Smokin Joe - I came away with a new found respect for him tbh.

frazier would go down in most peoples eyes at a similar level to mike tyson, or george foreman-thats not bad now. Ali was a sales man and sold the fight . He was ahead of his time and is the biggest sporting legend imo. I seen the documentary before and it showed boxing at its toughest and most brutal, there is no sport in the world as tough when its like that-they both genuinely came close to death in this fight. I could see how the untrained eye might view ali but he was a genius and used sports psychology long before it was the norm.

What was the name of the program? Might be available to download somewhere...

The Thrilla In Manilla is one of my favourite boxing matches of all time. Joe Frasier was fearsome back then, an outstanding boxer. Ali needed every trick in the book to get the better of him.

(There's a great film called Champions Forever that documents this golden era of boxing, showing lots of key footage from all the big match-ups. Also, they have Frasier, Ali, Foreman etc in the same room reminisicing and it's great interviewing. Highly recommended.)

ya I really enjoyed it, and as said before I have a lot more respect for frazser after it, its a pity he cant forgive ali for what happened but I guess thats up to him at the end of the day.

I thought at the end it was a bit pathetic ali apoligizing to the son who must have been young at the time and not apoligizing directly to frazer like a man. The end of round 14 was surreal, like 2 gladiators on the edge with ali fit to drop and frazer almost bling but willing to keep going, eddie futch was rite to stop the fight in hindsight as he wasnt to know ali was fit to keel over....

Came across this by accident on More4 last night. Absolutely brialliant. Don't know a whole pile about boxing but Ali wasn't portrayed in a great light. Frazier supported him when he was banned and he repaid him like that - uncle tom - gorilla - ignorant. Whatever about sports pscychology, that was not on and he shouldnt have needed to go that far if he was as great as peole say. Certainly gone down in my opinion. He got to Frazier so much that he would have literally gone out to die in the 15th in Manilla only for Futch and time hasn't healed him that much - look at his answerphone message!!! Very sad. 3 more things
    1. How the f**k did Ali get up after the shot he took in the first fight - unreal!
    2. Where can I get a poster of Ali on the canvas with smokin Joe standing over him!
    3. What was the story behind Frazier getting annihilated in Kingston by Foreman - any whiff of that fight rigged???
Ps - Ali's doctor came across as some langer on last nights show
The documentary probably had a Frazier perspective so I better get when we were kings out again for another look - great stuff.

Nobody could live with Foreman in the ring for more than 1 or 2 rounds back then. He dispatched ALL of his opponents that quickly with those huge haymakers of his (until Ali found a way to beat him in the Rumble In The Jungle of course).

foreman was a beast, that was never rigged, he gave frazier a bad going over and was beating other future legends like that too. Ali knew he'd need an edge over someone as good as frazier and also messed about with foreman for the rumble in the jungle.
