Two businesses under the one roof?

Who would have thought bikes and baby stuff would mix and sell?

    Care to discuss?

clothes and food? dunnes tesco etc

washing machines and paving slabs ? b&q etc

from recollection baby equip and bikes have been sold together for donkeys years -people used to go to paddy whelans for a pram and a bike or both -

think euro cycles took over the penny farthing who i think also sold prams so nothing new in the concept or putting the two together

and havnt mothercare moved into photography ?

Yeah I just found it really bizarre. It got me thinking about that dude who was on here who had that aces-direct.com website that was shocking and he tried selling all sorts of crap online.

That's when I started thinking of the whole Euro Cycles/Euro Baby thing, it's such a bizarre mix.

I'm not sure if this is anywhere near justification for such an idea, but perhaps the owners felt that the individual markets for baby gear and bikes are relatively small and that they can just share warehouse space, advertising costs etc by putting everything under one rough. Also everyone has a first bicycle, so perhaps they hope for repeat business from those who come in buying baby gear?

That would be my thinking behind it i.e. fit it all under the one roof. I frequently think of doing things like that.

The entrepreneur doesn't own it, but they have a few shops and really annoying radio ads.

No I don't own it and if I did, i'd sell it as I have no interest in baby stuff or bikes.

Tony Kealy's use to do both for a while before becoming an expert on baby stuff

Its only a guess as I have never been in there but I would imagine that they dont sell high end brand name bikes? More like cheap and cheerful bikes for joe soaps, probably their own brand in disguise. Also I'd imagine they sell kids bikes and toddlers bikes and trikes, maybe go karts and folding commuter bikes and then (folding) prams is the main thing they sell for babies (I dont imagine they sell nappies do they)?

If you think about the processes invloved in manufacture its all tube steel with wheels and bearings, probably all made in the same factory. They have a few outlets, they probably own their own factory in china who makes all the main money making products they sell, going straight from manufacture to retail is a great way to make a killing, especially if you can move the volume to allow regular orders/deliveries.

is that not a department store concept? every major town has a variation of one or a co op type set up -

i drove past the old paddy whelan shop on cork street today and the sign said ' cycles prams household goods electronics and fancy goods , now theres a mix ,must have been ahead of his time with his buisness model

and a local cyclist owns euro cycle/euro baby since when it was just one shop on the crumlin road ,well he lives local he was an international cyclist, and the place they operate out of on longmile used to be penny farthing cycles

Anyone know where Euro Cycles/ Euro Baby is located in Dublin?

And how do they compare to Mothercare/ Baby Bis/ Halfords, etc, for Buggies Prams & Pushchairs ........

I think you have it in one, one of the largest names in baby products - bike, manufacturers in china are Good baby, they also own Baby Dino. They use the same format bikes and babies. Like here, success over there creates thousands of copycats. I guess Mr Eurobaby hooked up with a bike and baby factories and felt it was safer to target two markets with the first container. Looks like it worked:)

It's on the Longmile Road, near Cost Plus Sofas and in the middle of a load of car dealerships. I've used them several times and find they're generally very good value and the assistants usually know their stuff.

Just to be clear they dont manufactor their own baby products or bikes. They sell raleigh bikes which are a well established brand and they also sell most well known brands of buggies. Just thought I'd clear it up since i've bought a bit there and they are a great shop.

Nearly all the manufacturers of bikes are actually made in 3 factories in china. I'd imagine that it's quite possible the same factories make prams too so that probably where the idea came from. I think from that perspective the business model makes a lot of sense.
