Nikon/Olympus/Canon + Nokia Smartphones

    Hi guys,
Was just reading the star trails thread this morning and decided to go hunting for a remote for my D40. Went to a few shops in town, one shop claimed the D40 didnt have infrared for a remote  Another said none in stock but "if i remember correctly they're €170 or so"

So, onto the web, and discovered that an application (IrRemote) I had downloaded a while back for my N95 can now take .ir format files (basically the controller for certain products - tvs, dvd players etc) from developers.

Im not sure who, but some genius has written files for Nikon, Olympus, and Canon cameras.

Anyway, it took me a while to get it set up and find the right .ir file, but it works a treat. Now, €20 (demo version available to try it out) for a phone application seems a bit steep, but it also works as a remote for pretty much any decent brand home appliance by default, and if not, somebody has probably created an IR file for it, and its still cheaper than the Nikon remote (excluding some ebay sellers)

If you're wondering, the compatible phones are -
    Nokia5500, 5700, 6290, E50, E51, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E65, E66, E70, E71, E90, N71, N73, N75, N80, N92, N93, N93i, N95, N95 8GB

I know the standard D40 remote has a nice little pouch that attaches to the camera strap, but I will always have my mobile with me.

If anyone is interested and has any trouble setting it up let me know and i'll try and help, there's a bit of a knack to it.

Oh ok, I actually assumed that after using the mobile app, but just thought this was handy as it's on your mobile

BTW, I picked up a remote for my D40 in the camera shop on Talbot St a few months ago for around €20 or €25.

Hi noblestee, I've downloaded this app to my N95 8gb but can't get it working on my EOS 400D.
I've downloaded and installed the app to my phone memory, I've opened the app and gone to "Add device", from the list of products I've selected "Other" and then selected "Canon", under Canon when I do a refresh I get 300D, 400D and RC-1. I've tried all these but specifically the 400D obviously but I can't get it to work.
Have I missed something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Yes, I had a similar problem.

If you go to options -> settings, you will see the first setting is IR Mode. There are 6 options method1, method2, etc. I tried each and of course it ended up being the last, method 6. Also, on my D40, I had to set shutter mode to remote, not sure if you have to do the same with canons.

Thanks for your help but still not working I'm afraid, I changed the settings to "method 6" and selected the "self timer/remote control" option on the camera but no joy :( . It is now working on my TV, DVD and Stereos though so I know the application works.
If anyone has managed to get this working on an EOS 400D It would be great if you could explain how?
    Thanks.

Try the other methods or any other .ir files available for canon cameras, other than that I'm not sure

You could try one of these!

    http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.806~search.camera%20remote

    For Nikon's try this

    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5455

It's only $3.99 (That's US Dollars not euros, including postage, pay with paypal)

Got this one for my father's E520
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5469

ONLY $4.38 including postage, and it works fine.

    How does that work?

Nikons have the handy feature that they think they are Sanyo TVs... so set your universal remote to a Sanyo TV, press the power button *click* goes the shutter :)

Don't know if this applies for Canons or other brands.

Yep, Just grab any universal remote and either set it to Sanyo or get it to do a search, for Nikon it's usually the 3rd or 4th beam when you search and for Canon it's a bit further in.
