UPC digital channels on DVB receiver

I'm on UPC analogue service (although I'm changing to digital next week) and I just got a HDD DVD recorder.

In addition to the analogue receiver, the DVD recorder also has a DVB tuner. I connected up the cable to the DVB input for the fun and was surprised to see all the digital channels present in the EPG. None of the channels have a picture, although quite a few have audio.

I'm just wondering if I can use the DVD recorder as a digital TV receiver or will I have to connect the digital box to it if I want to record.

    Hope this makes sense :).

It is against the Terms and Conditions of your cable service to use any non cable-TV supplied decoder to the cable outlet.

In addition, the standard for digital cable (DVB-C) is different from the DVB-T standard used by most of these DVD recorders/iDTVs. So yes, you'll need to output the UPC STB to the DVD recorder to record UPC Digital and you'll only be able to record the channel you are currently watching.

in theory, what if somone used a nagra cam, and a legit ntl card, in the slot of their digital tv... would / should it work
i am seriously curious about this.. btw.. i have a dish and sky. i have no connection to any cable/mmds/dtt service

@pa990's question is very interesting as for example Philips make LCD TVs that have DVB-T/C tuners as well as CA slot. I'm wondering if that would work, theoretically it should. Has anyone with appropriate hardware tried something like that?

We're not allowed to discuss it here, as above you can only use the equipment supplied.

I have my scart from the STB going into my DVD recorder. I have the coax going into the STB and then into the recorder and into TV. This means you can record from the STB and be watching a different station though it has to be analogue. Or vice versa record analogue while watching digital.

When you get the digital service you still have analogue.
