Trouble with Files and Folders

    I have a DELL pc with Windows XP Home Service Pack 3.
    The problem I have is that for some reason the appearance of the files and folders keeps changing.
    If for instance I create a folder and select that it be viewed as a Thumbnail tomorrow when I switch on the pc it will appear as a Tile.
    Similarly, the files in that folder which I usually select to be viewed as Details usually switch to Thumbnails.
    Furthermore, if I select a picture for the Thumbnail folder that picture at some stage will end up on various other folders not of my choosing.
    Any help would be gratefully appreciated as I am at my wits end at this stage.
